Biography

Kate Symons was born in 1883 in Bromley, Middlesex, England. Her birth was registered in Poplar, London in the third quarter of the year, with no mother's maiden name (usually indicating an unmarried mother or, as in this case, a widowed mother).^[1]

Kate's mother was Betsy "Mary Ann" (Kyle) Symons, the widow of Henry Symons.

Kate's mother Mary Ann Symons married Daniel Reardon in 1891.

From 1891 onwards Kate Symons went by Kate Reardon.

• Note: In 1891 and 1901 Kate is listed as the niece of her stepfather Daniel Reardon. It's not entirely clear why she is listed this way. Perhaps Daniel Reardon was actually Kate's uncle, meaning that a brother of his fathered Kate and her siblings out of wedlock - or perhaps Daniel Reardon himself was the father of Kate and/or her siblings. He is listed as her father on her death record.

In 1891 Kate Reardon (age 7, Scholar) lived at 36 Holme Road in East Ham, Essex with her stepfather Daniel (42, Registrar of Births and Deaths), mother Mary A (44 [~53]), and three siblings: Charles (14, Scholar), Florence (12, Scholar), and Frank Heine (10, Scholar).^[2]

In 1901 Kate Reardon (age 17, Student) lived at 17 Holme Road in East Ham with her stepfather Daniel (51, Registrar of Births & Deaths), mother Mary Ann (55 [~63]), and two siblings: Florence (21) and Frank (20, Surveyors Clerk).^[3]

In 1908, Kate left England and sailed to New Zealand from London on the SS Papanui leaving April 15 and arriving in Wellington, 10 June, 1908. Her occupation was listed as 'Domestic'.

Kate settled in Pelorus Sounds, Picton. Her sister Florence, was to emigrate the following year from England and also settle in the district.

Kate married Donald Nock in 1915, but just 9 years later, she died of TB aged 42, and was buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery. BLK 8 PLOT 106.

Any children possibly born in Kate's marriage are unknown. Birth search to 15/1/1920 NIL result.
