Biography

Margaret Ann Rector was born 17 February 1804 in Knox County, Tennessee. [1] She was a child of Morgan Rector and Amelia Ann Carter. She married George Francis 08 December 1823 in Morgan County, Alabama. She passed away 26 May 1879 in Sequin, Guadalupe County, Texas. She was interred in Happle Cemetery, Staples, Guadalupe County, Texas. [1]

To Margaret Ann Rector Francis, Sumervill, Morgan Ct., St of Alabama June the 5th, 1831. Brazos Austin Colony. Dear Sister, I this day with paine set down to wright to you. Abought the deth of Brother Joseph. Father and him Landed in Texas abought the first of Aprile . on the Leventh of May he was struck with litning Which Came varry near killing Mrs. Heard and Louisiana who was at his Camp. Mother and [torn] Received no hurt of consequence I nevr [torn] the p(l)esure of seeing him after he [had?] died hear his being abought sixty miles whir I live I have since bin to see the rest of Them. They are all in tolrable helth except Celia which is laid to the distress which she taken when Joseph got kild. She had got som beter before I left there. Father is truly pleased with the Country he requested me to say to Francies that he expected to find it good country but that it is far beyond any expectation he ses that it has never has bin [(?)] as good as it is and that he would advise any man ho would wish to liv [ (?)] in a desirable Country to Come to this I am confident myself that there ain't such another to be found it is very like that you will hear a grate many bad tailes abought it but listen to non of them for if man can live and enjoy himself in this government as in the United States of the North there is the most flatering prospects in this Country of making a fortun of any other in the World and also of being a helthy part. Pendleton and myself has injoid good Helth since we have been hear. I dont know what to say to you for Pendleton as he is at fathers. We have a vary fine Crop growing. Harriet is living with Father and expresses her wish to remain with him which there is no doubt she will do if you intend coming to this Country the Sooner you can get of in the fall the beter it will be for you, if you should want to wright to father it would be best to direct your leters to Bill's landing on the brazos. [Source: same as above] September the 3d 1832 Dear Children we received your letter last Saterday which gave us much satisfaction to here that you were well We are all well at this time thanks be to God for his mercy to us I am glad to here that you are still in the notion of comming to texes I belive you may come with out fear San Anna has fout in faver of a free republican government and has succeeded We have had no late account of him the last he was in a few days march of mexico the president left his seat and run away the head commander being surrouned by San Anna fell on his sword and kild himself the garrisons that was kept by the Spnyars in this colliny is broke up. Pendleton was in the battle at the mouth of the brases but received no hurt thare was 7 americans kild and 6 badly wonded and all thitty (?) wonded and 22 Spanyards kild and about the same numer wounded as of the americans the battle at nacogdoche 2 americans kild 2 wonded and 32 Span kild and 30 or 40 wonded the others give up and thay are all sent to San Anna I belive thare will be no danger in coming on and fetching your prechers with you I want to see you all kiss the children for me your aunt Sary has a daughter and call it amelia harriett give my compliments to brother moris and tell him that I want him to come and prech for us remember me to all inquiring friends the family joins me in love to you all you know we all want yo to come I add no more but remane your affectunate mother until deth Amelia Rector

Sir I will put in a few lines at the botem as Mother has left room and father requestrs me to say to you the risen he has not selected youre land all the good land in this Colony is taken thare Is a prospect of a Colony being let out above us on the Brases he is waiting to take his thare and yours allso it is spoken of As a vary plesent Country fine water and good land I think you would doo well to come and Choos for youre self perhaps you Could pleas your self best. The wars Taking place betwin the administration Party and General Santa Anni has cased a great deel of confusion amongst the people that was vary much divided but has all united in favor of Sante anna and has taken the government troops stationed hear and sent them on as prisoners of war. San anTonio holds out yet thare is some starts today to march against it it is thot tha will turn in favor with out a fight the caus of our taking up armes Against the administration party is tha was passing laws amongst us Contrary to the Constitution laws to soot themselves puting them in force by the military men General te Ran the Commander in chief has fell on his own sword and I hope Bustemente will loos his head then we will have beter times hear we have no (stated?)government but thare is no dought of Sante anna success he makes vary fair promises if so it will come to close in a few months if it has entall Reddy. I received a letter from the navidad som of them is in bad helth in perticular Harriett the Dr. thinks she is taking the Liver complaint We have fine Crops here it has rained threw the past month all most every day I must come to a close for the want of room I am yourse respectfuly - Claiborne Rector

Columbia June the 6th 1838 This is to certify that Pendleton Rector was a member of the Columbia Company and was in the Storming of Bexar on 5th of dec to the tenth 1835 and was in the Battal of San jacinto and at all times don his duty. W.H.Patton, Capt. of Columbia Comp According to the 1900 Census for Guadalupe County, TX, Margaret (Rector) Francis was born in Virginia.
