Biography

Sanford Redman is a part of US Black heritage.

Sanford was born about 1822 to James and Betsy Redman. ^[1]

He is likely recorded in the 1830 census as one of James and Betsy’s 3 boys under age 10. Also, there are 4 boys 10-23, and one girl age 10-23. ^[2]

He appears in the 1850 census at age 47, with wife Harriet age 46; no one else is in the household. ^[3]

He appears in the 1870 census in Milroy, Grant, West Virginia with Harriett ; he is 55, and she is 65. There are 4 other Redmans in the household, Susan E., age 19, John Scott, age 17, Archie Washington Redman, age 4, Alexander P, age 1. ^[4]

Sanford married Mrs. Hannah Beckwith about 1894. In 1900 they lived in mMilroy, Grant County, West Virginia.^[5]

He passed away July 1, 1904 in Grant county, West Virginia. ^[6]

Research Notes

His birthdate in different sources is anywhere from 1808 to 1822. More research needed. But he’s certainly not the Sanford referenced below, who lived from about 1836-1864.
