Confusion about Leonard Weeks' 1st and 2nd wives

In several sources, Mary Haines is shown as Leonard Weeks' first wife and mother of his children.[1][2][3]. However, the Chapman source also says that in 1682, Leonard Weeks testified that 20 years earlier, he had put his horse in his "father, Redman's pasture". Perhaps, Chapman speculates, Redman was his father in law, or possibly had married Weeks' widowed mother. Torrey's New England Marriages shows two marriages for Leonard: one with Mary Redman (born in 1649) by 1667; the second marriage with Elizabeth Haynes/Haines about 1679 in Portsmouth.[4]

Recent research conducted by a professional genealogist has resulted in the identification of his wives. The source says that Leonard Weeks married first _______ Haines, daughter of Samuel Haines; she died before 1667, childless, apparently. Leonard then married Mary Redman, in about 1667, and with her had eight children. Leonard was a widower by 1694, and between then and 1708 he married Elizabeth _________.[5]

Biography

Mary Redman was born to John and Margaret (Knight) Redman at Hampton, New Hampshire, December 15, 1649.[6] [7]

Mary (Redman) and Leonard had 8 children. (NOTE - Both these referenced sources show the name Mary Haines not Redman; however the children's names and dates of birth are correct:[1] [2]

  • John, b 1668
  • Samuel, b 1670
  • Joseph, b 1672
  • Joshua, b 1674
  • Mary, b 1676
  • Jonathan, b 1677/1678 (unlisted date)
  • Margaret, b 1679
  • Sarah, b 1680 or later

Mary (Redman) died sometime between 1680, the approximate date of her youngest child's birth, and 1694, when Leonard Weeks was a widower. She likely died in New Hampshire. Death records have not yet been located.

The Great Migration article on Samuel Haines concludes that it is an open question whether Leonard Weeks married a daughter of Samuel Haines or was a stepson of Samuel Haines.
