Notes

Note H4When Gramps was still small, the Reece family moved to Washington State. He grew up and attended school in sprigs and Garden Springs. After he married Gram, he worked for the Spokane International Railroad and for the hum bird Lumber Company. In 1929, Gramps started working for the Sandpoint Independent Highway District. During WWII, he enlisted in the Navy Sea Bees. He took part in the battle of Tarawa, helping to rebuild the badly damaged Japanese airfield so that American planes could use it. When He returned from the war I was about 4 years old. We went to the train depot to get him. I was dressed in my sailor suit which was made from one of his uniforms. This man came up to me where I was standing on the bench and said "Howdy Sailor". I said howdy back and he ask me if I knew who he was. I said "Nope". He said "I'm your Gramps" and I said "The hell you are!!!!!!". This man had snow white hair and when Gramps left for the war his hair was brown. Gramps was and still is the most favorite man in my life.......
Gramps loved sports. He played baseball for the Sandpoint City Team in the 1920's and played softball for the Sandpoint wranglers. The Wrangleers were local musicians who played for dances in the area in the 1930's Gramps and Uncle Bill Keller played with the band.
Gramps was a member of the board of supervisors for the Memorial Field until his health failed, spending many hours leveling the playing field, planting and mowing grass, erecting grandstands and seeing that the field was well maintained. He was a member of the Elks, the Kiwanis, The American Legion and an ordained deacon in the Presbyterian Church.
Peggie Latrenta Woolery tells this story about Gramps.....
"Your Grandpa really liked our oldest son Jack and every time we would stop and see them when we went to Sandpoint, he always reminded Jack of what he said to him when he was only 3 or 4 years old. They had an old bull dog(Snippy) and one day Jackie and your Grandpa were sitting on the piano bench when Jackie started sniffing and turned to your Grandpa and said "Phew man did you tart?" Of course it was the dog but your Grandpa almost fell of the bench. When I graduated from the 8th grade your grandparents bought my dress and I had to go to their house for a bath and have my hair curled . Always remembered the dress and kindness to me".
