"To Rev. Joseph Reed, one of the early settlers of Madison township, we are indebted for the naming of Richland County. He suggested the name of Richland County after Richland County, Ohio from whence he came. Joseph and his wife, Eliza Bell Reed, seven Children and his father and mother, Charles and Sarah Reed, migrated to Illinois by covered wagon from Richland County, Oh., in 1838 and settled on a homestead of 240 acres of government land, two miles east of Fairview, now Calhoun. He was a representative to the State legislature. Veteran of the War of 1812 and belonged to the Maryland militia. Buried in Calhoun cemetery. Taken from the Olney Daily Mail Centennial Issue."
