Biography

William was born in 1770. He passed away in 1856. [1]

William "Silver Billy" Reed **. Found multiple versions of name. Using William "Silver Dollar Billy" Reed **.

The nickname is historically "SILVER BILLY" Reed. William Reed was maybe a land speculator or maybe just a wealthy man who owned a great deal of land. Family History (Birmingham Library Family Files) says he traveled on his "land buying" trips in/with a wagon fill with "BARRELS OF SILVER" with to purchase the land. The word "dollar" seems to have come into play some hundred years after the death of William Reed. Regardless, he must have been an amazing character.

His nickname "SILVER BILLY" came from the fact that on his land purchasing trips he traveled in a wagon filled with barrels of silver for payment.

My ancestor Isaac Reed is said to have been the brother of Silver Billy. We have tested a Reed descendant's Y-DNA and have matched with other descendants of Nathaniel Reed, and one researcher thinks that John could have been Nathaniel's brother. If any living male Reeds descended from William's line remain, I would love to get one tested to see if we can prove the connection. Please contact me if you know someone who would be willing to participate.

I have removed a large portion of the biographical information and sources posted to William Reed m. Ruth Evans. This material belongs to ANOTHER William Reed of Jefferson AL. I ran into him accidentally when trying to sort out another Reed family.

William "Silver Billy" Reed m Ruth Evans, census records s/b Selfs, Jefferson AL. dob 1770, dod 1756. His estate is in some records shown as "William Silver Reed," causing many descendants to believe he had a Middle Name of SILVER! Confusing, I agree.

The OTHER Willam Reed, 1775-1851, census records, Powels, Jefferson AL. 2nd wife is Catherine. I have a tree for this family on Ancestry: "REID S/C TO BLOUNT AL." This link will take you to "the other William." https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/107685583/person/110064398158/facts

If you are the person who changed William Reed's name, "Silver Billy" was a nickname referring to the barrels of silver he carried his wagon when he went out to make land purchases. Please check your sources before changing documented information.

Reed-14399 and Reed-10609 appear to represent the same person because: same name, including unusual nickname

same birth date within 5 days same spouse different death dates. I would use info from Reed-14399 which appears to be better sourced. children from both profiles can be merged.
