" James H. Reed was born in Boston, Mass., Aug. 1, 1819. In early life he taught school in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1852 he removed to Illinois, and engaged in manufacturing in Mercer County. Business proving unfortunate, he resumed teaching. On the opening of the Fremont campaign in 1856, he was induced to take editorial charge of the Oqnawka Plaindealer, and in that calling manifested an ability and zeal that gave him a leading position as editor and public speaker. In 1857 he removed to Aledo, Ill., and in connection with Horace Bigelow established the Aledo Reeord, which by his energy and editorial ability, surpassed its competitors in that county, and proved a success. He labored here till 1863, when he removed to Grundy Co., Ia., and engaged in farming. His health failing, he removed to Monmouth, lll., in 1865, and purchased a half-interest in the Atlas establishment. During years he labored with pen and voice for what he believed to be the best interests of the Republican party as well as the public. In all movements of local concern, his counsel was sought and opinions valued, and he was known to nearly every good word and work as long as his strength would allow him to participate therein. In May, 1869, he sold his interest in the Atlas and accepted the appointment from President Grant of internal revenue assessor for the 4th district, which position he held until the office was abolished in 1873, discharging every trust with advantage to the Government and credit to himself. By this time his health was so much impaired as to unfit him for active business. The last few years of his life were pecuniarily successful, and he was enabled to make comfortable provision for his family. He died Aug. 14, 1874. His first wife's name was Stackpole, by whom he had 6 children, 5 girls and 1 boy. His second wife was Mrs. Tucker. Mrs. May (Reed) Hollister died in Waterloo, Iowa, Sept. 14, 1886."
