James Reed was born on 26 March 1838 in Ohio,[1][2] the oldest of ten known children and five sons of John and Sarah Jackson Reed.
On 21 August 1862, when he was in his mid-twenties, he married Catherine Galloway. They were divorced 30 Oct 1882. This marriage produced 7 children, (3 boys and 4 girls).
