George was born about 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. He was the son of William Reed and Sarah Sally Dulaney.

George Reed was married to Nancy Scaggs on 2 Nov 1821 in Montgomery County, Virginia.[1]

In the 1850 census George (age 51) was in Russell, Russell, Virginia, United States.[2] He was a farmer. The household included:

He is buried in Newberry Cemetery, Tarpon, Dickenson, Virginia.[6] The comment on his grave memorial is "According to the old Jack Dutton bible, the correct death date is 1884."

CGayle, Just now finding your question. I have seen so much wrong information published & posted on the Internet for the Reeds. I have seen where George D. Reed's father listed as George William Reed; however no source or documentation was listed. I have not seen where any of the early Reeds (before 1800's) had middle names. George Reed, Sr. (d. 1807) had 5 sons: Andrew, Peter, George, Jr., Humphrey & William (our line). The early tax lists & Census records often included an initial to their names, for example, Peter's sons were listed as George P. Reed & Humphrey P. Reed - the P. indicating they were Peter's sons; however this was done by the Census or tax collectors. Our George D. Reed was listed in several records as George W. Reed, so this may have cause the confusion that his father was George William Reed; however this was just the way the records were written to help identify the different Reeds with the same first names. It is interesting to note that the early records for Humphrey's sons list them as: George H. Reed, or George Reed, H's son, etc.; but in later records almost all of Humphrey's sons were using the initial "E" as a middle name. His wife's maiden name is not known; however speculation is that her name may have started with an "E", since this is what their sons used as a middle initial. I think that is the case for our George D. Reed, since his mother's maiden name was Dulaney. Susan Jurban - Oct 22, 2004
