Identity issues, Disputed Associations

Multiple William Reads. Robert C. Anderson in his Great Migration, warns that there were multiple William Reads living in Boston and Weymouth at the same time, and that their biographies are so confused that Anderson chose not to deal with the problems (in the feature for another William Read, ending on p 30)[1] He said the works of Pope and Savage "muddled the records."[1] The one work he recommends is by Donald Lines Jacobus, The Granberry family and allied families, including the ancestry of Helen (Woodward) Granberry".[2]

The other William Read of Weymouth was married to Hayme and Crooke.[1] Yet another William Reed of Weymouth was the husband of Avis Chapman.[1] This William Read of Woburn, was married only to Mabel Unknown.[1]

Unknown Origin. William Reed had been assumed to have been the son of Sir Thomas Reade and Mary Cornwall.[3] This is not shown/proven and these parents were detached. See Research Notes.

Biography

William was born c. 1587 (aged 48 on 18 July 1635) [Hotten 106].[1] He may have been from Newcastle-uon-Tyne, Northumberland, as he went there sometime after 1648 and died there in 1656.[1] His origin is unknown.[1]

William married about 1629 to Mabel Unknown.[1] After William's death, she married 21 November 1660 at Woburn, as her 2nd, to Henry Summers, Sr. [WoVR 2:181],[1] She died at Woburn on 15 Jun 1690, [1] She is sometimes assumed (by various online data bases) to have been the daughter of John Kendall and Elizabeth Sackerell, but apparently without evidence.

Immigration

William immigrated in 1635 aboard the Defence with his wife and three oldest children, George, Ralph and Justice (on 18 July 1635, "W[illia]m Read," aged 48, "Maybell Read," aged 30, "George Read," aged 6, "Ralph Read," aged 5, & "Justice Read," aged 18 months, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Defence).[1]

At New England

William settled first at Dorchester, moved to Scituate by 1642, Roxbury by 1647, & Woburn in 1648. Returned to England permanently between 1648 & 1656, settling at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.[1]

On 18 March 1637/8, William was granted land in the Neck and in the Cow's Pasture at Dorchester.[1] On 26 August 1639, William sold to Thomas Clarke this property and more: his dwelling house with 4 acres, 4 acres of commons at Squantum Neck, 6 acres 46 rod at the neck of land, a meadow 10 acres more or less, 3 acres with commons which belonged to John Miller, and 2 acres of meadow at the second fresh marsh.[1]

On 7 July 1648, W[illia]m Read of Muddy River bought a house and land at Woobourne from Nicholas Davis of Charlestowne; this included 50 acres of upland, 4 acres of meadow, 4 acres in Rock Meadow, 2 acres in Brook Meadow, with all barns, outhouses, fences, etc.[1] On 10 June 1674, Samuel Walker, Sr. of Woburne deeded to his son, Samuel Walker, half of the farm which was purchased of William Read.[1]

William wrote his will 9 April 1656, and it was probated on 31 October 1656 at Woburn, Massachusetts.[1] However, he had traveled to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England sometime between 1648 and 1656, where he died.[1]

On 19 June 1660, Israel appeared in court and chose his older brother, George, as his guardian.[1] Both George and Mabell asked the court to allow for an apprenticeship, paid to the guardian (George), out of Israel's inheritance, because of his lameness.[1]

Research Notes

Unknown Parentages and Origin. William Reed has been assumed to have been the son of Sir Thomas Reade and Mary Cornwall.[3] However, the dates are impossible. Thomas Reade was born in 1607, and when William Reed was deposed on 18 July 1635, he reported his age was 48 years (b c. 1587).[1] Also, according to Compton Reade in A record of the Redes of Barton Court, Berks ..., Sir Thomas Reade and Mary Cornwall had no son named William.[4] (Please see their profiles for more information).

Anderson reports William's origin is unknown, except that he went to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in his last months or years.[1] The profiles for Sir Thomas Reade and Mary Cornwall have been detached as parents.

Additional biographical? A prior version of this profile included, "William Read (spelled "Read" in Great Migration series); born about 1587; immigrated: 1635 aboard the Defence; marriage: Mabel Unknown; residences: first Dorchester, then Scituate, Roxbury, Woburn, Massachusetts; died after April 9, 1656 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England."

Non-existent child, Michael. William's will was probated at London, but a copy of the will was submitted at Middlesex County, Massachusetts.[1] That copy replaced the name "Abigail" with "Michael."[1] This may be the source of the reports of a non-existent child named Michael.

Disputed children. As a result of multiple merges with duplicates (correct and incorrect), there are currently several "extra" children attached to this profile. It is currently "under construction."

There are attached child profiles not further associated in the narrative. These include
  • Mary Reed (1651-), said born 29 Jan 1651 in Woburn, Massachusetts, Reports burial at "Vernon, In." The only source for this profile is an Ancestry Family Tree, with a link to nowhere.
  • Michael Reed (1638-), said born 1638 in Woburn, Massachusetts. This profile is flagged, "Research suggests that this person may never have existed ..."

Reade-334 and Reed-481 appear to represent the same person because: These were set as rejected, but they have the same death date. Could you check again? Thanks! Liz

P.S. I have no idea which LNAB would be correct (Reed or Reade).

posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
There is no sourcing for the Reade date and place of birth. If this can be tracked down and credibly linked to Reed (spellings don't matter), then that would justify a merge. The Reade profile is hollow, and it would be nice to merge it away.

The information that his will was probated October 31, 1656 is correct, but Anderson shows that was proved at London and also submitted for probate at Middlesex County.

Is it assumed that he went to England to live? According to the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, it sounds as if he was just on a trip there with his wife, when he died. (Ref Vol 6, April 1982)

I'm going to remove Newcastle-upon-Tyne as his place of birth, it had been assumed that place was his home but it is unsourced, so going with generic "England." Anderson says his place of origin is unknown.

Assumption that he planned to return to England permanently seems uncertain, since his wife returned to New England and remarried. I'm going to remove sub-project, PGM Beyond New England.

Is there a source that's come to light that places William's marriage to Mabel _______ in Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, England? I see that on the profiles for their first two children is also Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, England. The Great Migration doesn't give a location for the marriage or birth/baptism of the children. It seems that since he returned to Newcastle-on-Tyne, that's the only clue to his English origin.

Yes, I concur, M Cole. Any response from the profile co-managers regarding M Cole's findings?

If not, the Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire, England location should be removed.

marriage updated to place: England.

comment should be placed on the profiles of the first 2 children asking about their place of birth. Thank you.

See the notation below list of children, where it says that this profile is under construction?

I can't find who added that to the biography, perhaps it came along in a merge.

Anyway, would someone like to research & update the children if needed, please? Then remove the notation about construction. Thank you.

William Reed (aka Read, Reade} and his wife Mabel are mentioned in a book of Records of the Town of Littleton, Massachusetts printed by order of the Town and printed in 1900 by the Patriot Press, Concord, Massachusetts. See pages 466-68 .https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99XF-Z5HK?i=248&cc=2061550. It was compiled from many sources. It states that William Reed of Woburn was born in 1587 and came to America in 1635.It also mentions he was the supposed son of a Thomas Reed. It mentions he was married to Mabel KENDALL (b. 1605?). Mabel KENDALL is also listed as the mother of George on both of his marriage records and as the mother of Israel on his marriage record to Mary Kendall. Surname should be changed to Kendall and merged with profile of Mabel Kendall Summers (aka Reed) Kendall-6490. There are sources cited on her profile as well.

Reed Reade-2 and Reed-481 appear to represent the same person because: Same death. Children are similar (but will need to be resolved after merge). There is a comment that the preferred LNAB might be Read. If so, that might need to be done before the merge.
posted by M Cole
I'm going to postpone the merge of Reed Reade-2 and Reed 481. -2 has a mother that needs disconnect. Additionally since there is no baptism record, we should go with Anderson and Hotten regarding LNAB; which is spelling "Read." Will the profile managers please manage, and make these changes then the merge can go forward. Thank you.
posted on Reed Reade-2 (merged) by Cheryl (Aldrich) Skordahl
Reed Reade-2 and Reed-481 are not ready to be merged because: see comments on Reed-481. -2 has mother that needs detach. Surname spelling Reed is not substantiated and therefore should be changed to "Read" as Anderson and Hotten have indicated.
Jo-Anne, there is no primary source documentation in this 1861 genealogy. Without primary source documentation for what this person wrote in 1861 it does not meet the criteria required for pre-1700 WikiTree profiles. There is no doubt that Robert Anderson was aware of this publication and has not used its contents in his work because it is not verified.

I plan on changing the wife's maiden name to Unknown on Oct 6 unless someone comes up with a valid source for the surname Kendall.

Jo-Anne, is there any primary source documentation for the information in the 1861 publication you linked? Given the number of cautions on bad or confused information on this profile and the fact that his parents remain unknown what shows us that the person in the link below is in fact the brother of this William?

Reed Reade-2 and Reed-481 appear to represent the same person because: Reed-481 is the PPP profile. similar birth info. similar death info. Son George on both profiles in process of merge. Thank you for reviewing. Teresa (WikiTree Arborist)

Read-920 and Reed-481 do not represent the same person because: Ayrshire is in Scotland not England
posted by Anne B
Read-920 is not so empty, and is green privacy, so not a good fit. Are there any objections to changing the spelling to Read used by Anderson, since we have no birth record. this is also the spelling used in Hotten's list. ? Update one manager emailed to say it's ok with her.
posted by Anne B
Can we merge him with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Read-920 (blank profile) to change LNAB to Read?

Update: Must withdraw previous comment. The Miner site seems to contradict itself as to whether Esdras and this William were brothers. I should have paid more attention to the caution of multiple William Reads. My regrets. D. Jenkins
