Jim was born in about 1894 to James Reed and Edith Reed nee Thomas and his birth was registered[1][2]during the first quarter of 1894 in the district of Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom.
Jim, as noted in the April 1901 Census[3]had been brought up, with his family, in Paget Street, Grangetown, Glamorgan.
The family had moved to Penarth, a few short years before he set out on a new life working as a Butcher and lived with his family, as noted in the April 1911 census[4]in a nine roomed property at Inglenook, Sully Road, Penarth, Glamorgan.
Jim was a regular Sunday school attendee at Trinity Methodist Church, on the corner of Stanwell Road and Woodland Place, Penarth.
Little is known as to why James was travelling to either America or on to Canada , but James must have seen the adverts for new opportunities in either the United States or Canada and decided to seek his fortune there.
He travelled to Southampton and bought a third class ticket (steerage) on the Titanic. It cost him £7 1s 5d. (Ticket no 362316)
The ship left harbour on April 10, 1012. After four days at sea the Titanic hit an iceberg. A couple of hours later, on April 15, it sank.
More than 1,500 people lost their lives, with Jim[5][6]amongst them. He was just 19 and had given his last address as The Platform Tavern, Southampron, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom. Sadly, Jim's body was never recovered.
Members of his Sunday school erected a brass plaque in his memory. It can still be seen on the inside wall of the church and his memory is[7]inscribed on his father James Reed and mother Edith Reed nee Thomas headstone in Section E, Plot 49, Penarth Cemetery, Penarth.
