Caution: Multiple John Reads

Robert C. Anderson in his Great Migration, warns that there were multiple William Reads living in Boston and Weymouth at the same time, and that their biographies are so confused that Anderson chose not to deal with the problems. (Page 30)[1] He said the works of Pope and Savage "muddled the records."[1] The one work he recommends is by Donald Lines Jacobus, The Granberry family and allied families, including the ancestry of Helen (Woodward) Granberry".[1]

Both of these William Read/Reed(s) had sons named John, this one profiled here was born in 1646 at Boston, and the other John Reed was born in 1649, probably at Weymouth and married Bethiah Frye (Jacobus, pp 299, 302).[2] In addition, a third John Reed was born in 1674 at Weymouth. Caution will be of great benefit, especially in merges of duplicate profiles.

Biography

John Read AKA Reed, Reade (he is called "Read" by both Anderson and Jacobus)[3][2]

Origin

John was born 23 September 1646 at Boston, Massachusetts and was baptized there on 27 September 1646.[3] He was the sixth and last child of William Read and Susanna (Hayme) Read.[3]

By the time of John's birth in 1646, the family was living at Boston (though they had first settled at Weymouth).[3]

His mother, Susanna (Hayme) Read, died at Boston on 12 October 1653 [BVR 42].[1] His father married 20 March 165[3/]4 at Boston, as his second, to 2) Ruth Crooke.

Family

John's elder brother, Josiah Read, married John's wife's younger sister, Grace Holloway in November, 1666 (recorded in both Marshfield, Massachusetts and Norwich, Connecticut where they settled).[2] Possibly John met Hannah Holloway through his sister-in-law, Grace.

John married twice.

  • John married about 1672, as his first, to Hannah Holloway, daughter of William and Grace (Unknown) Holloway of Marshfield, Massachusetts.[2] Their marriage record has not been found, but is proved by a deed, 6 September 1673 at Marshfield, in which Hannah, as "Hanna Read (sometimes Hannah Hollaway) wife to John Read of the Towne of Norwich" gave land of her late father's to the town of Norwich, Connecticut.[2] Her date of death is unknown.[2]
  • John married by 1694 (and probably much earlier), as his 2nd, to Sarah Unknown.[3] The record of this marriage has not been found.

Children (from John's will, uncertain who is the mother, except the youngest, who was certainly Sarah's, and they may have all been Sarah's):[2]

Daughters:

  1. Sarah Read b. ca. 1680; mar. 24 April 1700 Isaac Hall.
  2. Mary Read b. ca. 1682, d. 7 March 1763; mar. 3 Dec 1702 Robert Hebard.
  3. Constance "Constant" Read; mar. David Fuller.
  4. Christian Read b. ca. 1689, d. 27 Sept. 1721; mar. 5 May 1709 John Flint.

Sons:

  1. John Read; mar. (1) Mary Branch, 14 March 1711/12 at Windham, (2) Apr 27, 1721 at Windham, Hannah Palmer.[4]
  2. Thomas Read b. ca. 1688 [Norwich?]; mar. 1) Feb. 22, 1711/2 Rebeckah Palmer,[4] 2) Esther Webb.
  3. Nathan/Nathaniel Read b. 9 March 1696, d. 3 April 1696 (mother was certainly Sarah).

Norwich, Connecticut

John and Hannah removed to Norwich soon after their marriage, as early as 1673.[2]

Windham, Connecticut

On 24 October 1694, John (with consent of his wife, Sarah) sold his property at Norwich, including his dwelling, to Moses Firgo (Fargo), and the family removed to Windham, Connecticut.[2] In May, 1703, John was listed as one of the proprietors of the land which was to become Windham.[2]

Death and Legacy

John's will was dated 14 September 1724 and was recorded 27 June 1728.[5][2] There is a John Read who died March 4, 1727 at the age of 81 years (would certainly fit with this John Read).[6]

John's daughter, Christian (Read) Flint, was deceased at the time, but he mentioned her two children in his will.[2] Wife, Sarah and son, John, were his executors.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Reed-10131 and Reed-1695 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, same parents and wife

Read-145 is the TARGET profile for all duplicates of the John Read, son of William and Susanna Hayme, born 23 Sept 1646 married Hannah Holloway and Sarah Unknown. Any duplicates can be merged INTO this one.

This profile is now "good to go." (The children's profiles need attention)

Reed-1695 is the TARGET profile for all duplicates of this John Reed who married Bethiah Frye. Thanks!

Reade-397 and Read-145 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge these 2 profiles in the direction as set, INTO Read-145. The goal is to have this Weymouth/Boston family all spelled "Read" which is the spelling Robert C. Anderson chose in his Great Migration series. Hopefully this will help with some of the confusion about the early Massachusetts Read/Reed/Reade families.

Thanks!

Will the merge correct the gender also?
Reed-1691 and Read-145 appear to represent the same person because: Would like to do this merge, effectively changing the name to the correct spelling "Read" This is the spelling used for the William who married to Susan Hayme and Ruth Crooke. This will help us keep them straight, (as we will use the Reed spelling for the other William Reed and Avis Chapman family)

Thanks!

Removed Bethiah Frye-187 as wife of John Reed. Please see Jacobus, The Granberry Family and Allied Families, Page 302 (husband of Bethiah Frye) versus Page 299 (this profile)

Link is in the biography.

Removing Mary Bates (Bates-850) as wife of John Reed; Great Migration VI:27 names only wives 1) Hannah Holloway and 2) Sarah ____; in addition, GM II:I:199-200 names only one husband for Mary Bates; namely, Hopestill Foster.

The above also suggests that Bethiah Frye may be an incorrect spouse of this John Reed.
