History of Clinton County

Provided by Laura Contarino: From "The History of Clinton County, Ohio;" Chicago: W. H. Beers & Co., 1882, Richland Township, page 1102--Taken from Family Tree Maker's County and Family Histories: Ohio, 1780-1970--disk 1.

(William G. Hutchings) was married to Elizabeth the daughter of Cyrus and Judith Reed, an old and respected family of the county; his marriage was consummated August 23, 1847. Nine children have been born to them, viz., Emma, Clara, Carothers, Reed, John, Callie, Rose, William and Neva; Clara, Carother, Reed and John, are dead (by 1882). Emma married Samuel Douglass, and Callie married David Wright. Mr. Hutchings is a variety man in the fullest sense of the term--useful in every department of trade and life; in dry goods store, drug store, tavern, Postmaster, auctioneer, artist, or assistant engineer, or what not he can lend a helping hand. In cases of sickness of misfortune, no kinder person or better nurse can be found. His estimable wife was born in this township, (Richland), September 30, 1826. She has lived in the township all her life, except one year spent in the "Miami House" at Morrow, Ohio. She is a consistent Christian lady, and holds membership in the Christian Church. Mr. H. belongs to the order of Masonry, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Mr. Reed, father of Mrs. H., was born in Va., in 1784; moved with his parents to Kentucky in 1788. His children (editor--must be referring to Cyrus's parent's children) were Absalom, Samuel, Cyrus, George, Josiah, Daniel, John, Sarah, Dolly, Hannah, Elizabeth and an infant. The two elder sons came to the county in 1801 or 1802, and bought the Lindsey Survey, number of entry, 732. Unfortunately they lost their money, and to buy over. Their settlement was made in 1806. They dealt largely in stock, and were very respectable citizens. Absalom held the Justiceship about twenty years. Cyrus (third son), served a term in the war of 1812, after which he came to Clinton County, and bought one hundred acres of his brothers. He married Judith Town, of Pickaway County, Ohio, August 12, 1819; they had nine children, viz: John, James C., Mary, Elizabeth, Christy Ann, William, Josiah, and two infants. Cyrus Reed died in May, 1861, aged seventy-seven years. Judith, his wife, died June 2, 1864. The children of Joseph and Mary (Slocum) Town, are as follows: Avis (Davis), Anor (Miller), Martha (Ransey), Giles, Judith (Reed), Mary (Owens), Elizabeth (deceased), William, Ebenezer, Benjamin, Elizabeth (deceased) and two infants--thirteen in all.

Court Cases re: his parents' estate

14 Jun 1823 Hornback Estate

Place: Bourbon Co., KY
Note: Dispute over estate of Samuel HORNBACK; Adam HORNBACK vs. Jno. REID & Others.

[8]14-Jun-1823: Adam HORNBACK, for himself and as committee for John HORNBACK, Adam ALKIER and wife Margaret HORNBACK, (Samuel, Adam, William and John HORNBACK, Dorothy HORNBACK HAWKINS, Sally HORNBACK, Sabina HORNBACK THACHER, Jemima HORNBACK - children of Daniel HORNBACK, dec.) who was one of Samuel HORNBACWS, dec. children. Samuel left a considerable quantity of land situated on Strode's Creek and sundry negro slaves.

Since the death of their ancestor, a certain John REID, Sr., who has since departed this life, possessed himself of about 45 acres of land left to be divided by said heirs, as well as an additional .40 acres of land and negros: Nancy, Sarah, Mahala, Nepp and Washington. Having possessed himself of said land & negros, he would not suffer your complts to enter into and enjoy the same nor would he pay them any portion of the negros hire or any part of the rents and profits of said land, nor divide the negros between himself and your complainants. Nor would his children & heirs since his demise: John REED, Jr.*, Josiah (Jonathan)*, Samuel, Cyrus, Absolam*, George* and Daniel* REID, Hannah & Isaihah WILSON, Dorothy & Lewis THOMAS, Sally & Wm. BUCHANAN*, Elizabeth & Daniel THATCHER*, heirs of John REED (* in Bourbon Co., KY, 9-Jun1823, others out of Co.).

John REED took the slave Nancy by force.

16-Oct-1792 - deed B302 - John REED, Bourbon Co., KY sold to Samuel HORNBACK, for 110 pounds money of VA, a tract of land containing 205 acres, part of the preemption granted to Peter CASEY, heir to Benjamin CASEY and a patent from the Registers Office. The transfer contained a clause stating that John REED would compensate Samuel HORNBACK if any of the land had a bad title. Witnesses: Boon INGLES and Weathers SMITH.

REED's answer: They deny bill. The slave, Nancy, was given many years ago by Samuel HORNBACK, dec. to the mother of your respondents, who was the wife of John REED, dec., daughter of Samuel HORNBACK, as part of marriage portion. On 29-Jan-1813, said Samuel, entered a common law complaint, an action of detinue, to recover Nancy and her daughter, Sarah (other slaves named in suit born since then, Charles is dead). The Nov-1813 Term of the Court decided slaves were the property of Jno. REID, Samuel had no title to them. They also claimed the statute of limitations. Also states that Samuel had but 5 children: John, Adam, Daniel, Margaret (m. Adam ALKIRE) and Elizabeth (m. John REID) HORNBACK. Samuel gave 100 acres of land, conveyed by deed to John HORNBACK. Also gave Adam HORNBACK 78 acres by deed, heirs of Daniel HORNBACK, dec. 78 acres by deed, Wm. ALKIRE, the husband, Samuel gave 50 acres. Afterwards, by some arrangement, Samuel purchased back same 50 acres. Samuel never gave any land to his daughter, Elizabeth, their mother, in his lifetime. However, Samuel, during his lifetime, made about an equal distribution to his other children.

Samuel made his last will and testament on 8-Oct-1812, devised to his daughter, Elizabeth REID, the respondent's mother, a full share of his estate at this death. Samuel departed this life a few years later. Will recorded & administered in May-1816 term.

Some years ago in the lifetime of their ancestor Samuel HORNBACK, he and a certain John REED, Jr. undertook to build and erect a sawmill & water gristmill on Strodes Creek in Bourbon Co., KY. Operated some long time until whole milling establishment caught fire and the gristmill was consumed and burnt to ashes. John REID was indebted to said Samuel for money advanced by him for use and benefit of the said REID of at least ,000. Some time after they commenced building the mill, Samuel became insane, infirm and wholly incapable of transacting any business and was given to frequent intoxication. After mill was burnt, REID, finding Samuel of unsound mind (even in his best health the said Samuel was a meek minded man), REED gave out in speeches that HORNBACK was indebted to him in the sum of 50 pounds. John REED, Sr. and Jr. got Samuel drunk, drew up a note payable by Samuel to John REED and proceeded to execute it in the foiling fake & scandalous manner. That John REED, Jr. took the old man's hand (who was 85 years of age and lying dead drunk) into his hand and thus with his own exertion, fraudulently procured the old gentleman's name on the note. REID received judgement on the debt and kept it secret from HORNBACK's heirs.

REID's answer: Mills built by John & Samuel in partnership and continued until fire. Deny Samuel owed John nothing (as stated by complainants) and that John owed Samuel ,000. They state that Samuel had some kind of fit by which his mind for some time appeared to be impaired, but he was not insane or incapable of transacting business. He was toward the close of his life and a little intemperate in the use of ardent spirits. The debt was arbitrated by two millwrights chosen by John and Samuel and they judged in John's favor. Samuel made his mark as he was illiterate.

26-Jul-1824 - Depositions taken from Mary & Jemima HORNBACK and Mason SEAMONDS. SEAMONDS called to value some millwrights along with Jacob WIRT on 12-Dec-1814. They judged HORNBACK owed REED 211 pounds 1 0 shillings. HORNBACK did not appear satisfied.

Notes

Alternate birth year: Abt 1772, in VA[14]

[15]Who the first settler of the township was has long been a matter of doubt, the honor being due to one of two settlements that were made at about the same time. Careful investigation of all testimony likely to throw light on the subject now leads to the belief that the first settlement was made in what is now called the Reed settlement. The settlement of the county was made in three stages, the Reed settlement on the Wilmington & Washington pike being the first ...

The first settlers were Absalom and Samuel REED, two brothers, who were from Bourbon Co., KY, in the year 1803, and settled on land in the LINDSAY Survey. Both brought their families with them. Absalom's family consisted of his wife, Edith (Paris) REED, and one son, Jehu, who was the only child they had. Samuel brought his wife, Sarah (Paris) and three children, viz. Elizabeth, Absalom and Abner. After his settlement here, he had born to him Josephus, Cyrus, John, William, Mary and Samuel P. The brothers bought all the LINDSAY Survey, but afterwards sold 100 acres to their brother Cyrus, then a young man, who passed through the war of 1812, and in time came to OH and settled on this land.

(pg 1109) William C. REED, farmer, P.O. Reesville, is a son of Samuel P. REED, who was born in Richland Township in 1815. He (Samuel P.) was a son of Samuel REED, one of the first settlers in Champaign Co. He was brought up on the farm, and in younger days was largely engaged in buying and driving stock in connection with his other brothers. He was married to Nancy CUSTIS, and soon after settled on the old REED homestead. He was given by his father 150 acres of land, to which he added other land, owning at one time 360 acres. After the event of his marriage, he followed teaching during the winter months; was represented in some of the minor offices of the township, yet he was a man devoid of political aspirations. In his business he was successful, and his labors resulted in the accumulation of a large property. The following children were born to them, all living, viz., William C., Elizabeth E., Crispin, Sarah E., Henry B., Mary M., Maria J. Mr. REED died 25-Nov-1859. Mrs. REED departed this life 16-Mar-1875, aged 52 years.

[16] Early Settlers: The honor which is always due the first settler or settlers in a new community can not be definitely placed in the instance of Richland township. Who the first settler of this township was, has long been a matter of doubt and the honor will have to be divided. It is the general belief among the older inhabitants of this township that the first home was established in what is now called Reed settlement. This was one of the three distinct settlements which was made in this county in the beginning. The Reed settlement was located on the Wilmington and Washington pike...

If we are right in order of settlement, the the honor is due Absalom and Samuel REED, as they were the founders of the Reed settlement. They emigrated from Bourbon Co., KY, with their families, in 1803, and settled on land in the LINDSAY survey. At the time when the REED brothers settled here the celebrated Indian chief, Logan, with his band, is said to have been occupying this land...

pg 323 Absalom and Cyrus REED, brothers, came from KY in 1810 and settled on LINDSAY's survey #732. They were extensively engaged in stock-raising, being among the first to introduce improved breeds of cattle.

pg 625 On the maternal side, Mr. CUSTIS' grandfather, Samuel REED, was born on 1-Sep-1778, and died on 5-Apr-1854. His wife, who before her marriage, was Sarah PARIS, was born on 25-Aug-1782, and died on 3-Oct-1863. Samuel and Sarah REED settled in Richland township in 1805. They came from KY, in which state they were married, and it is probably that they were born in that state. Upon settling in this township, Samuel REED bought 1,000 acres of land, which he afterwards lost through an imperfect title and had to pay for the same land the second time. He and his wife were members of the Christian church and were of that class which gives tone and solidity to the community at large. Samuel and Sarah REED had nine children:

  1. Elizabeth, b. 16-Feb-1799;
  2. Absalom, b. 25-Nov-1800;
  3. Abner, b. 10-Jan-1803;
  4. Josephus, b. 15-Jul-1804, d. 10-Sep-1840;
  5. Cyrus, b. 9-Jun-1806, d. 6-Apr-1839;
  6. John, b. 23-Oct-1808;
  7. William, b. 27-Nov-1810, d. 15-Jan-1863;
  8. Mary, b. 12-Apr-1813, d. 17-Sep-1896; and
  9. Samuel P., b. 3-Sep-1815, d. 25-Nov-1860.
