Note: There is some controversy in terms of whether his mother's maiden name was Grimes or Graham.

Robert is listed in the home of his widowed mother; Sarah - with two inferred siblings: Rachel and Peter on the 1850 Census in the Jacksonville District of Floyd County, Virginia.^[1] On May 29, 1851 he married Margaret Dulaney in Floyd County.^[2] He is listed with Margaret on the 1860 Census and the 1870 Census^[3] in the same area of Floyd County. The census records indicate that they had at least six children: Miriam, Darius, Richard, Burdine, Millard, and Cephus (incorrectly listed as Sophia). By the time of the 1880 Census he is listed as widowed in the Indian Valley District of Floyd County^[4] with his three youngest children: Burdine, Millard, and Cephus - still in his household.
