Jonathan was born in 1809. He is the youngest child and son of Jonathan Reed and Sarah Reed. He married Mary "Polly" Jett in 1829. He appointed his uncle, his father's brother-in-law, as his guardian to enter into the Marriage Bond with him along with Polly and her father. Jonathan and Polly had at least 7 children together. They lived the first part of their life together in the Harrison and Barbour County areas of what is now West Virginia. The later part of their life they resided in Ritchie County, West Virginia. Polly passed away first in 1871. Jonathan never remarried and passed away in 1883. They are both buried in the Old Spruce Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Ritchie County, WV,
