Pawlet Constable, 1789-1791[3]
Selectman in the town of Pawlet, 1793-1798[3]
4 Jul 1793, he subscribed to the support of Rev. John Grisworld as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Pawlet[3]
"from New London, Conn., 1770: married a daughter of Col. William Fitch.... He removed to Richmond, N.Y., 1798, and died in 1828, aged ca 80."[3]
"Among the parties which came here in 1795 was that of which Philip Reed was a member. ... Isaac Adams and a man named Chamberlain ... came as hired men of Philip Reed. With Philip also came three of his sons, born in Vermont, John, Silas, and Wheeler. That Philip Reed visited this section in 1794 is evidenced by the articles of agreement made in that year by him as one party and Gen. Israel Chapin as agent for Phelps and Gorham. By this agreement he made the purchase of a tract of land, to be described later, providing he made the payment of a certain sum before September 1798. It is quite possible he came from Canandaigua, remaining with Capt. Peter Pitts, Gideon and William, who had been here five years, and located his contemplated purchase. Philip Reed and the two Chipmans had married sisters, daughters of Colonel William Fitch. These three women, with Jen, a negress, and Altie Clark, Margaret Fitch's mother, whose second husband was a Clark. William Fitch dying in 1785, probably made the feminine side of the party. Philip's wife was Margaret Fitch, Cyrus Chipman's Annie, and Judge Chipman's Sinai." - Livonia Gazette, Supplement. Livonia, New York, Friday, Friday, August 28, 1903.
"In 1794, Philip Reed had entered into an agreement, above referred to, with Israel Chapin, as agent of Oliver Phelps, for the purchase of lots Nos. 48 and 49, township No. 9, county of Ontario, of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The sum to be paid for these lots, which comprise about 740 acres, was 550 pounds money of New York. ... These two lots comprised a tract of lland bounded on the north by a line running east from the county line to the old cross road. This line is the fence just north of the school house, the line between the farms now owned by John Coyne and Giles Swartout." Livonia Gazette, Supplement. Livonia, New York, Friday, Friday, August 28, 1903.
