Biography

Thomas, a native of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, was the son of Samuel Read and Ruth Brown Read. Thomas was married to Ruth Carriel December 29, 1766 in Uxbridge. Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to Townshend, Vermont, where Thomas was one of the original landowners, with a record of his settlement there May 30, 1771. The family had eleven children.

On September 9, 1792, Thomas and Ruth Read became members of the Congregational Church, "Thomas Read and his wife were taken into the Church after previously being propounded and the ordinance of the Lord's Supper administered."

Thomas was among the inhabitants lists for Townshend in 1802 and 1810. He died there November 22, 1814 at the age of 68.

Note on the spelling of the name: In the older records, the name was spelled "Read." Various branches of the family also used the spellings "Reed" and "Reid."
