Biography

George Rees 1873 St Brides Married Mary (?) Hubberston 1868 See; George and Mary Rees 1872 of St Brides

George Rees of St Brides Green the son of Thomas Rees and his (1st Wife) Mary Ann Ormond, was baptised 14th April 1872 at St Brides parish church Pembs.

It is not known for sure when George moved with his parents from St Brides to the parish of Walwyns Castle, but can be found on the 1881 census at Walwyns Castle, living at the family home with his father, and step mother. We know that his mother Mary Ann died in 1877, and that his father married Ann Harries, the widow of Charles Cosker in 1878, at Walwyns Castle parish church. So we must assume that the move was before this date. With George at the family home are his siblings, William (b 1871) and John (b 1873) also at the family home is William Cosker, Ann’s son from a previous marriage, and George’s step half sister Mary Ann (b 1879). Mary Ann was born in the parish of St Brides, so it maybe that George and the family were still living in St Brides at that time.

Things are less complicated on the 1891 census, as George is working away from home and can be found at Rosepool Walwyns Castle, working at the farm of John and Frances Richards. The following year he married Mary Evans at Herbranston parish church on the 6th August 1892. George’s brother William was a witness. The other witness was possibly Mary’s sister Elizzy. Mary made her mark, whilst George signed, this is an oddity for the period, as most people were literate, or certainly able to sign their name at least. After the marriage George and Mary moved to the old parish known then as “The Hamlet of St Martin Haverfordwest” it is now part of Camrose parish. The couple lived at Cuckoo Grove Cottage. With them at the family home are five of their children, Mary Ann (1893) Martha Ellen (b 1895) Thomas (b 1899) and William George (b 1900). A quick look at the census will tell us that the couple lived in Marloes from 1893 through to 1900, and that they had only just moved to St Martin.

The couple continued to live in the St Martins area up till at least 1907, before moving to the old parish of Haroldston West. That is if the 1911 census is to be believed. The couple can be found at Haroldston Yard Broad Haven. The address is unknown to me, and I was born in Haroldston West, and lived in Broad Haven as a child and young adult until 1977, and I have never heard of the place. Anyway that said. The couple had five of their children living at that address, these were Tom (Thomas) Willie (William) and three younger children, Edith (b 1905) Sidney (b 1907) and young Howard (b 1911).

I know that George spent some time in the Camrose area, as I have a school photo of their son Howard, taken in 1923 at Camrose South school. So we must assume that the family are living in the area.

We next find George in 1939 on the registration taken at the outbreak of world war two. He is living in the old parish of Robeston West. He is living with his married daughter Ann Mary Phillips aka Mary Ann Rees, and her husband John. Also at that address is George T Phillips (b 1915) possibly the son of John and Mary Ann, and therefore the grandson of George Rees.
