Biography

Served as the Chaplain of a militia co during the Revolutionary War.

Solomon Reaves (b. 1754) was the son of William and Prudence Harrelson Reaves. He grew up in Virginia and visited the Carolinas when he was a young man. He was born in Halifax, VA.

When he became 21, he left Virginia and traveled to South Carolina.

In 1777 Soloman married Sarah Floyd, who lived near Mullins, Marion, SC. The couple decided to settle at Reaves Ferry, North Carolina. Soloman purchased 480 acres of land for $34.40 and built a home on the banks of the Waccamaw River. He was a farmer as well as a minister.

Soloman and Sarah Floyd Reaves were the parents of nine children:

  1. Rhoda,
  2. Charles,
  3. Jerusha,
  4. Prudence,
  5. Annie,
  6. Olive,
  7. Samuel,
  8. Joel, and
  9. Mark.

Sarah died in 1832. After Sarah’s death, Solomon married Winney Unknown. She is mentioned in his will. [1]

Soloman's death in 1835 was the result of an unusual accident which occurred at the home of his daughter Rhoda Gore. He was sitting in a straight cane-bottomed chair on the porch when one of the front legs of the chair slipped into a knot hole, throwing him forward and causing a severe head injury. He died the following day. [2]
