Biography

John and his wife Elizabeth nee Stewart Reid emigrated from Blair Atholl Parish of Perth County in the Highlands of Scotland. Crossed the Atlantic on a ship named "Commerce" which departed from the Port of Glasgow, Scotland landed at Pictou, Nova Scotia on the 10th of August 1803. On the Captain's Log John Reid was listed as a Farmer and accompaning him was his wife Eliza, aged 23, and two children: 1) Alexander, aged 3 1/4, and 2) Ann, aged 1 1/4. By ferry, he and his family crossed the St. Lawrence Straits to Prince Edward Island and settled onto a 100 acres of Lot 63, called Murray Harbour North.

In 1825, John Reid served his first of four terms as a "Fence Viewer" for his area (Lot 63) which involved examination of fences between properties, including encouraging repairs and settling disputes. ("Prince Edward Island Register" - 31 March 1825, pg. 4; 13 March 1827, pg. 4; 17 March 1829, pg. 4; "Royal Gazette" - 8 March 1831, pg. 4)

OBITUARY: Islander, 26 April 1867, pg. 3 Died - At Murray Harbour, on the 14th inst., John Reid, Senior, at the advanced age of 89, and 10 children and 53 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, to mourn their loss, but their loss was his gain.
