Timeline

1823

John Reid's tombstone indicates that he was born on 3 July 1823. The 1850, 1860, and 1880 US Censuses give his age as 24, 36, and 60 respectively, none of which correspond to a date of birth in 1823. While the tombstone is no more likely to be correct than the census, it at least had a month and day to go along with the year. All three censuses gave his place of birth as Mississippi. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

1850

In 1850, according to the US Census, John Reid was a 24-year old farmer living in the 3rd Police District, Pike County, Mississippi. He lived with his 24-year old wife, Matilda Reid; 5=year old daughter, Melissa A. Reid; 4-year old daughter, Rebecca A. Reid; and his 2-year old son, James Reid. All of the Reids were born in Mississippi. He owned real property valued at $100.00.
Also living in the John Reid household were 65-year old Rebecca Howell and 40-year old Thomas Howell. The Howells were both born in Georgia. None of the adults in the household could read or write. [3]

1860

In 1860, according to the US Census, John Reid was 36-years old, still a farmer, and still living in the 3rd Police District, Pike County, Mississippi. His wife, Matilda, had also aged 12 years in the 10 years between census enumerations and their family and fortunes had grown. Their 3 oldest children, Mallisa A., Rebecca A., and James, previously enumerated on the 1850 US Census, were still at home and attending school. They had added four more daughters (Angeline - 7, Polly - 5, Emeline -4, and Seleta - 6 months) and another son, Jesse - 2. The value of John Reid's real estate holdings had increased to $800.00 and he owned $300.00 in personal property.
In the period since the 1850 Census, 86-year old Rebecca Howell (who had aged 21 years in the ten years between censuses) and 46-year old Thomas Howell (who only aged six!) had moved into a new household next door to the John Reid family. Thomas Howell owned no real estate and no personal property was listed on the census either. [4]

1880

In 1880, according to the US Census, John Reed (misspelled, but certainly John Reid) was 60 years old, still a farmer, and living in Beat 3, Lawrence County, Mississippi. If he was 60 years old in 1880, he had aged 24 years in the 20 years since the 1860 Census. His wife, Matilda, was listed as 55 years old on the 1880 Census, which means she had only aged 19 years in the intervening 20 years. Their daughter, Caroline Reed, was 17 years old and single according to the 1880 Census. Jesse Reed, a 22 year old farmer, single and born in Mississippi lived in the next household over. This was almost certainly their son, Jesse Reid, who had been 2 years old at the time of the 1860 Census. The next household over from Jesse was headed by James Reed, aged 27 and married with children. This James Reed was almost certainly their son who was 12 years old according to the 1860 Census. He had managed to age only 15 years in 20. James lived with his wife, Roscena Reed, and four children. [5]

Reid-2027 and Reid-3184 appear to represent the same person because: I believe Reid-2027 and Reid-3184 (John William Reid) are the same person. Reid-3184 has birth and death dates -- which are the same dates enscribed on John William Reid's tombstone in Providence Cemetery in what is now Lawrence County, MS. I transcribed that same information in June 1999. Reid-2027 has a different birth date but has the spouse of John William Reid as Matilda Gertrude Howell (Howell-2205). This is the correct spouse for Reid-2027 -- although none is listed on that profile. I've confirmed that information with the 1880 and other censuses (for some reason not all of my census sources transferred from TMG to Family Tree Maker and I'm going to have to redo that research or at least data entry).
