Obituary

John Reid -- On Thursday, March 10th., Mr. John Reid, who lived far from the maddening crowd's ignoble strife, passed peacefully away, in his ninety-first year. Deceased was born in Weston and lived in King Township, Stroud, and Wyevale before becoming a resident of Saurin about 45 years ago. About sixty-four years ago he married Elizabeth Birdle, who with a family of two sons and five daughters <illegible> The family are: Thomas Reid, Toronto; William, Elmvale; Mrs. Finlay MacArthur, Mrs. J.F. Brown and Mrs. B.E. Sandiford, Toronto; Mrs. W.E. Archer, Tiny; and Mrs. Sam Lyness, Port Credit. The funeral to Elmvale cemetery was held on Saturday afternoon, March 12th. The pallbearers were: Messrs. John Downer, Alex McGrath, Finlay MacArthur, William Archer, John Braithwaite and Emerson Legace. The services at Wycliffe church and Elmvale cemetery were conducted by Rev. W.C. Stubbs, Rector of the Parish of Elmvale. from the Elmvale Lance newspaper.

Research Notes

The Place Name Suggestions for Saurin (1932) comes up as "Saurin, Springwater, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada". This is incorrect. Flos township amalgamated with Vespra township,and part of Medonte township to form the municipality of Springwater in 1994. ^[6] The correct Place Name is "Saurin, Flos, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada" McGill University's Simcoe Innisfil Map^[7] and their associated Index of People, Full record for Reid, John, lists his birth date as 1845, and his nativity as York Co., Ontario, Canada, Business Employed in the saw mill, Year Settled 1873, Post Office Vine, Town Vine, Innisfil, Simcoe, Atlas Date 1881.^[8] The Vine Post Office, and the village of Stroud were about 1.2 miles apart, so this fits with the residences from his Obituary.

Another case where the Place Name Suggestions is incorrect for the date. Village of Markum, County of Peel, Ontario (Districts were abandoned in 1849) Canada. Markum, York, Home District, Canada West, is correct.
