Biography

Thomas was born in 1675. He married Mary McKean from the Scottish highlands and they had children: John, Nathan, Elinor, Alexander, Thomas, Mary and James, of which three, Colonel John Reid, Jr., Nathan and Alexander are mentioned in the book. [1] All of the children are included in the will of Thomas Reid, [2] from which the death date has been inferred. No gravesite has been identified for this Thomas Reid.

Research Notes

"Among the pioneers of Augusta county, were three brothers, of Scottish extraction, who came from the County Down, in Ireland, where they were born Thomas, John and Andrew Reid. (They were the sons of Alexander and Sarah Milne Reid.) The oldest of these brothers, Thomas Reid (the subject of this profile) married a highland woman named McKean, and had by her three children, two of whom married their cousins, daughters of their uncle, John Reid, Sr., who bore the title of Colonel. These two were Colonel John Reid, Jr., who married his uncle John's daughter, Martha; and Nathan, who married his uncle John's daughter, Sarah. . . The third brother, Andrew Reid, Sr., had, among others, a son, Andrew Reid, Jr., who married Sarah, daughter of his uncle, Colonel John Reid, Sr. and Martha Nisbet, and the widow of his uncle Thomas Reid's son, Nathan."[1]

The above conflicts with the information of Russell M. Reid:
"Before 1720 the Scotch-Irish had extended their settlements westward to the mouth of the Susquehanna... The second congregation was at the head of Elk creek, afterwards called 'The Rock Church.' now 'East Nottingham.' In the records of the Presbytery of Newcastle, under date May 18, 1720, the following record appears: 'a certain number of people, lately come from Ireland, having settled about the branches of Elk river, Thomas Reed and Thomas Cladwell, their commissioners, supplicated this Presbytery, that, at what time this Presbytery think convenient, they would appoint one of their number to come and preach among them...' The Rev. Samuel Young was sent by Presbytery..."
The congregation formed in 1720 was then in Elk Township of Chester County, Pennsylvania, now Fairhill township of Cecil County, Maryland, just south of Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
Thomas Reid, Esq., was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1724 and again on August 25, 1726.
A Thomas Read was a member of the Assembly from Lancaster County.
Will: 22 FEB 1733 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA [3]
Probate: 06 AUG 1734 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA [3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

I notice that this man has two sons named John and I wonder if that's correct.

Thank you. I'll try to follow up, time permitting. But if anyone else would like to, please do!

Update: I believe the other John (Reid-9683) should be detached from the parents. I'll put a comment on that profile.
