I am a descendant of the Pienaars, du Preez's on my Mom's Father side. Roos Mom's Mom Bothma who arrived in 1654? Cloete who arrived with Jan van Rieebeeck

The ancestor of the Pienaars, Jacques Pinard, was born on June 18, 1666 in Nantes, France. He qualified as a carpenter and married on January 10, 1687 in the French church of St. Aechten (the “Prinsehof,”) in Delft (Netherlands) with Esther Fouche (Fouche). Both fled there as a result of the persecution of Protestants in France after the lifting of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The couple left with twenty other French refugees on the ship "Voorschoten" to the Cape of Good Hope - the first ship with French refugees left for the Cape. Due to a strong southeast wind, the "Voorschoten" had to anchor in Saldanha Bay on 13 April 1688 and Jupiter was sent from Table Bay to bring them to the Cape. The farm "Lustig Aan", located on the Wildepaarder River (a tributary of the Berg River), near the Klein Drakenstein Mountains near Paarl, was granted to Jacques and his wife in August 1694. His surname's spelling soon changed from Pinard to Pienaar.

Two sons were born. The eldest, Pieter (Pierre) (1690), later married Johanna (Jeanne) Terrier. They moved inland: grazing licenses were granted to him as far as "beyond the Gourits" (1743). The second son of the ancestors, Jacques (1692), married Louisa Cordier. They move north-east where grazing licenses are awarded to him in the Bokkeveld. In 1697 Esther Fouche died on the neighbouring farm "Wildenpaardejacht" of Philippe Fouche. (farm was until recently owned by former president FW de Klerk). In 1698, Jacques married 15-year-old Martha le Febre, with whom he had six children. Two of them, Jean (Jan) (1708) who married Catharina Botha, and Salomon (1710), who married Sara Oosthuyzen, propagate the tribal name. Both brothers and their families moved inland in the vicinity of the Gourits River and later Swellendam. The progenitor, Jacques, was one of the Huguenots who signed the indictment against WA van der Stel during the Adam Tas rebellion of 1706. The Pienaars distinguished themselves in various fields in South African public life. Only a few are mentioned. Pienaars River is named after Petrus Gerhardus Jacobus Pienaar (1819), who later moved north and settled in Zoutpansberg. The Dan Pienaar neighborhood in Bloemfontein is named after Daniel Hermanus Pienaar (1893), who distinguished himself as a general during World War II in battles in North Africa, including Sidi Rezegh, Gazala and Alamein. He crashed on Lake Victoria on December 19, 1942 when his plane crashed. It is said that Genl. Jan Smuts saw him as his successor in the United Party. Andries Albertus Pienaar (1894) is better known as the author Sangiro. Pierre de Villiers Pienaar (1904) gained notoriety in the field of speech therapy and phonetics, and as a dictionary compiler.

His son Uys De Villiers Pienaar (1930) was park manager of the Kruger National Park and later chief director of National Parks. Johannes Jacobus (Jack) Pienaar (1877), a farmer warrior during the Anglo Boer War, took part in the rebellion of 1914 and later became administrator of the Transvaal. Schalk Willem Pienaar (1916) distinguished himself in journalism and newspaper editor of Beeld. Prof. Kristo Johannes Pienaar (1922) was a world-renowned botanist and amateur actor. More recently, Jacobus Francois Pienaar (1967) gained notoriety as a Springbok rugby captain who won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. Trix Pienaar from Pringle Bay is a well-known actress and Antoinette Pienaar from Beaufort West is an “herb queen”. Then there is prof. Gert Pienaar who was head of department of journalism at the then PU for CHE and his son prof. Gerrit Pienaar, currently at the law faculty of the NWU's Puk campus and also prof. Peet Pienaar, who was known for his weather forecasts! Du Preez history 1050-1688

The meaning of the name Du Preez is "man from the house at the meadows". The Du Preez family originates from the region between the Schelde and Somme rivers in Flanders. They originally wrote the name as Des Prez and also Des Pres.

The surname is in existence for more than 900 years. The earliest bearer of the surname was Lambert de Pre, born around 1050 and who was seneschal of Luik. His descendants inherited the surname. Another well known du Preez was the famous Renaissance composer, Josquin des Prez, 1440-1521."

"The Du Preez ancestors brought with them something which, after 300 years, is still preserved in the Cape State Archives: the original certificate of church membership which the French Walloon church gave them as testimonial. […] No other South-African Huguenot family can today show such a testimonial.

Translated, the certificate reads:

We, minister and elders of the Walloon church of Vlissingen, certify herewith that Hercule des Pres and his wife openly professed the Reformed Faith and lived amongst us with increasing devoutness, attended the holy gatherings and participated in the Sacrement of the Holy Communion. We thus request our highly honoured brother-leaders of other churches to accept them as members of the church of Jesus Christ in the faith with which we signed this testimonial underneath our usual seal. Done during 'n church council meeting on this 11th day of the month February 1688 (signed) Lombard, Minister (Sign.) Daniel degroote, Elder on behalve of every one (on the church council)"

"Hercules, the Du Preez forefather, was married to Cecilia d'Atis (1650-1720) and died on 15 Nov 1720 in Soetendal Farm, Drakenstein, South Africa."] On April 18, 1690, Hercules des Prez received 510 Gulden from the Dutch East-Indian Company. He lived on the farm De Zoete Inval. (De Soete Inval), now Paarl station and east of it. The farm was promised to him in 1692 and formally allocated 15/10/1697. Hercules died in 1695 whereafter Cecilia D'Atis married Pierre Dumont.

North-west of Ath is Courtrai in Flanders, a town on the Lys associated with the Des Prez family which reached the Cape on the Schelde in 1688. Courtrai was held by the French between 1668 and 1678. ..The Des Prez party consisted of Hercule des Prez, born about the year 1645, his wife Cecile (Cecilia) D’Atis, some five years his junior, and six children: Hercule, Elisabeth, Jacquemine (Jacomina), Marie-Jeanne, Philippe and Francois-Jean. The place of origin of the Des Prez family is uncertain, but Athis southwest of Mons may provide a clue to the earliest beginnings of the D’Atis family. Later generations would certainly not have remained confined to the village from which they presumably took their name and it is interesting to find in the church registers of Oostburg in the United Provinces a reference in 1748 to the marriage there of a Marie-Catherine Dathee (sic) from the Saint-Quentin generality of Picardy.

It is, however, certain that the Des Prez family was living in the Courtrai district when the town was a French possession. The daughter Elisabeth was baptized in the Sint-Maartens church there on August 31, 1670, with Charles Loridon and Ludovica (Louise) Pittens as godparents. In the same church on July 4, 1677 Francois-Jean was christened, taking the name of his godfather Francois Loridon. The godmother on that occasion was Jeanne, or Johanna van Neste, of a family well represented in the local church registers. It is probable that, as with other French-speaking settlers from Flanders, the Des Prez party was at home in the Flemish language.

The family must also have lived at some time in Bethune in the province of Artois, since it is known that Marie-Jeanne des Prez was born there. If the date of her birth, 1675, is correct, this would indicate a temporary move there from Courtrai. It is possible that Philippe des Prez was also born in Bethune, as he gave the name Artois to his farm in the Land van Waveren. On the other hand, this could be taken to indicate that the Des Prez family had its origins in that province. It is also evident that Hercule des Prez and his wife were once resident in Lille, where Jacquemine was born. Graham Botha gives Courtrai as the birthplace of both Hercule des Prez and his son of the same name, but no confirmation of this has been discovered.

Hercule des Prez and his family were at Vlissingen in Zeeland by 1686, together with his wife’s brother Nicolas D’Atis. On August 29 of that year the two men applied to the municipal authorities to join the Sint- Jans guild of tailors without payment of the usual charges. The request points to the necessity of guild membership for obtaining remunerative employment as an artisan, as well as to the financial difficulties in which so many refugee families found themselves. It also provides evidence of the trade followed by the Cape settler, an occupation in keeping with his background in the textile centres of the north-east. The Vlissingen authorities were prepared to accept the applicants as paying members and to admit them to citizenship when they had taken the required oath.

The refuge in Vlissingen enabled Hercule des Prez and his wife to practise openly the Calvinist faith and on February 11, 1688, eight days before they sailed with their children on the Schelde, they were given an attestation of membership by the minister and elders of the Walloon church in Vlissingen. They had, in the words of the document, “fait ouverte profession de la Religion Reformee, et vescu avec edification au milieu de nous, frequentant les sainctes assemblies et participant au Sacrement de la saincte Cene du Seigneur”. The attestation was signed by the pastor Andre Lombard and, in the name of his colleagues, by the church elder Daniel de Groot.

… The voyage to the Cape on the Schelde brought the Des Prez and Prevost families close. Elisabeth des Prez stood as godmother at the shipboard baptism of Jacob Prevost, with the ship’s captain as godfather; Philippe des Prez was later to marry Charles Prevost’s daughter Elisabeth.

Events leading to arrival in South Africa

The Edict of Nantes, a decree giving partial religious freedom to the Huguenots (French Protestants), was proclaimed by Henry IV, king of France, in 1598 and revoked by Louis XIV in 1685.

When the edict was revoked, hundreds of thousands of Huguenots were forced to flee France and take refuge in Protestant countries. Hercules des Prez (1645-1695) fled with his family from Kortrijk or Courtrai, a town in the south western Belgium of today, in West Flanders Province, to the Netherlands.
