Flora Belle Reid was born May 8, 1884 in the Broadbay area of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her home place is no longer standing. It was off of Old Thomasville Road deep in a wooded area. The house was close to a spring in which they was able to get their water. It was used by the families in the area for their source of water also. My mother told of going to the spring and carrying the water back to their home when she was young. On April 19, 1903 she married Roland Swaim in Forsyth County, North Carolina. Their home was on Old Thomasville Road just inside the city limits. The house is no longer standing. I spent my early years staying with Flora and Roland while my parents worked. Before my time this was a working farm with several barns, smoke house, wash house and chicken houses. I guess this was the only wash house I have ever seen with the big black pot built over a brick fireplace. I never remembering seeing Flora use it for washing her clothes in. Flora had long hair to her waist. She would braid it winding it on top of her head to make a bun. She kept her long hair until right before her death. She wore her dresses almost to her ankles and did wear the handmade bonnets. Once a week she would have someone to pick us up and we would make the trip to Winston-Salem for her shopping. She would sit me down in the corner in the men's hat section at Belks as she shopped. Her home was modern for the times. She did have an indoor bathroom. In the kitchen she still had her kerosene cooking stove she used but did have an electric stove also. She had a hooster cabinet in the kitchen and a pantry off of the kitchen for storage. Flora had a singer pedal sewing machine that she still used. She spend a lot of time on the screened side porch watching the traffic on Thomasville Road. I guess thinking how the world had changed from the time that she was born. Flora lost her battle with cancer on January 16. 1966. She was buried next to her husband Roland at Union Ridge United Med. Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Flora was my great grandmother and this personal history is from Janice Harper Robertson.
