When Joseph was 6 years old the family emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, departing London and arriving in Welllington on board the Kaikoura on 6 November 1889. From there the family made their way to Auckland.
His name was published in the New Zealand, World War I Army Reserve Rolls (1916-1917). He was a fish-curer of Malfroy Street, Rotorua at the time.
On 15 November 1920 he was tried in the Auckland Court on 2 charges of Assault. His occupation was recorded as fish dealer. He was fined £1 on each charge.
His wife Mary died in 1937.
In 1940 he was found in a Gaming House and fined £5.
Joseph passed away in July 1961 at the age of 79 in Rotorua, New Zealand.
