Luke and Abbie lived at Kinderhook, New York, where he served as the Principal of the Academy. Later, they lived at Hudson, New York. They had eight children. Luke had been named after The Rev. Luke Whitcomb, who had been the minster of the Congregational Church in Townshend, Vermont.
The Kinderhook Academy, where Luke served as principal, was incorporated in 1824. The Academy was an early-day prep school to help ready men for college or employment. Young women also attended the school and were treated to a "solid and ornamental education."
In the late 1860s, Luke and family moved to Hudson, New York, where Luke worked as a teacher. The local newspaper covered at least two events of Luke's.
Luke was in charge of a school exhibition in April 1873, which was announced in the local paper:
Luke appeared at an event called "The Concert for the Yellow Fever Sufferers," as recounted in the local newspaper:
Between 1870 and 1875, Luke experienced quite a number of deaths in the family: his daughter died in 1871; his son died 1871; another son died 1872; and his sister, Lorraine, died in 1874, and, finally, his wife died in 1875, along with his daughter, Pauline. It must have been a difficult time.
Toward the end of the century, in the 1880s and 1890s, Luke lived in Hudson, New York, where he owned and operated a news and stationery shop (the News Depot). His name appears frequently in the Hudson, NY, city directories from this time. His son, George E. Reid, also lived in Hudson during this time, so perhaps the elder Reid lived with his son.
Luke died at the age of 72. According to his son's petition to administer Luke's estate, Luke died of natural causes without a will. His estate was valued at $700, or about $16,700 in today's money.
His obituary appeared in The Republican, Thursday, June 15, 1893.
