James arrived in Port Phillip with his mother Catherine and younger siblings, Elizabeth and Terence in 1844. Sadly James' father John Reid died on the "Wallace" journeying to Australia 1843/44. Catherine and her family were "forwarded to relations in Adelaide by Parish subscriptions". These relatives were the late John's family. His mother Rose and brothers James and Terence with their wives and famiies, and sisters Mary and Sarah, arrived on the "Mary Dugdale" in Oct 1840 from Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan. The families lived on the Montague Estate, Dry Creek.
