Robert was born in 1842 in Glentogher, County Donegal, and baptized on 5 February 1842 in Carndonagh.[1].
He married Mary in St. John, New Brunswick, on 13 June 1862.[2] The family moved from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia sometime between 1863 and 1865.[3] As of 1869, he was living with his family in Noel Road and working as a miller.[4] As of 1871, he was working as a farmer and sailor.[3] As of 1881, he was still living in Noel with his family and working as a farmer.[5] As of 1887, he was working in lumbering.[6] As of 1891, he was living with his family in Rawdon Church.[7] As of 1894, he was working as a miner.[8]
He immigrated to the United States in 1899, supposedly at the same time as his wife, his daughter Ellen Christina, and his grandsons Robert and George.[9][10]
As of 1900, he was living with his wife, grandchildren Robert and George, and his daughter Ellen Christina at 153 Charles Street in Cambridge and working as an elevator-man.[9] As of 1910, he was living with his wife, his daughter Ellen Christina, his son George, and George's family at 78 Thorndike Street in Cambridge and working as an elevator-man at a book bindery.[10] In 1917, he listed his residence of that of his son James at 123 Thorndike Street in Cambridge. At the time, he was 5' 6", with a red complexion, gray hair, and blue eyes.[11]
He passed away on 11 June 1922 of a cerebral hemorrhage and arterial sclerosis in Cambridge. He was residing at 88 Fourth Street at the time. He was buried in Kennetcook, Nova Scotia on 15 June 1922.[12][13]
Research Notes
Robert's baptism record lists Robert as his father, which is likely a mistake. His uncle Robert has another son Robert, who was born in 1844, and a daughter Rebecca, who was born a few months after this particular baptism record in 1842.
