Elijah was born in 1820 in Burke, North Carolina. He was the son of William Reid and Mary Paine. He married Nancy Annette "Annie" McLeod and they had three known children. He went off to serve in the Confederate Army and died on 2 Oct 1864 from wounds sustained in action on 30 Sep 1864 at the Jones' Farm in Petersburg, Virginia. It is believed he may have been buried in Virginia.

Note: Elijah was born in Burke, North Carolina. In 1777 Burke was formed from Rowan County during the American Revolution and named for Thomas Burke. As the population increased, parts of Burke became other counties, one of which was Caldwell County in 1841. Caldwell was formed from parts of Burke and Wilkes Counties[1].
