Biography

Christian Remick came from England or from Holland. He was born in 1631 In England or Holland. He arrived in Maine in 1651 or 1652 and was living at Kittery 24 Jan. 1715. He signed the submission to Massachusetts in 1652. He settled on Eliot Neck, where he had a grant of fifty-two acres confirmed by the town, 8 April 1651. Six later grants are recorded. His house stood near the river, not far from the present school-house, He was a planter and surveyor and was often one of the selectmen and Treasurer of the town. His wife Hannah was living 30 April 1703. Christian Remick was a proprietor of old Kittery, and when the common lands of Kittery and Berwick were divided, about 1750, his grandson, Nathaniel Remick, received several hundred acres. [1]

When he was 24, he married Hannah Foster, daughter of Andrew Foster and Ann Alcock, in 1655 in Kittery, York, Maine, USA. He was buried in Eliot, York County, Maine, USA.

He died after 12 May 1718 in (what is now) Eliot Neck, South Eliot, York County, Maine, USA. (the last found deposition written when Christian was still alive was dated May 12, 1718, age 80. [2]

Christian Remick's approximate date of birth arrived at from the following record:

4 Jan 1698-99, "The Deposition of Christian Remich aged 67 years of thereabouts Testifieth . . . that he well knew Dennis Downing now Deceased Lived on the farm . . . which his son Joshua Downing now Posseseth and that . . . Dennis Downing Possessed it in year fifty one . . . he being a near neighbor to said Downing. . . ." [York Deeds, 4:f.151.]
Christian's first grant of land occurred in 1651, and before 17 July 1661, when he had 20 acres granted him by Kittery, he had received 52 acres on which he built his homestead. His name appears on a list of freemen of Kittery, 16 Nov 1652, and when Kittery acknowledged herself under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts, 18 May 1653, one of the signers was "Christian Remech." His signature again appears on a Kittery reminstrance dated 20 Dec 1652, and on a Maine petition, date unknown, but probably about 1669.
Christian served as selectman of Kittery from 1670 to 1673, in 1676, and in 1688. He was one of a special committee appointed to instruct Kittery's Deputy to the General Court of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay in 1673, and the Representative to the General Court of the Province of Massachusetts in 1692.
The last mention of Christian Remick alive was in a deposition dated 12 May 1718. 23

Hello PM's and those on the profile trusted list. Christian Remick appears to have had a bit of a presence in early Kittery, and other coastal areas of Maine, so much so he left a variety of record 'footprints' behind. While researching my own Maine families I came across an image which show his lots in 1697 at Great Cove, Roque Bluffs, Maine which are situated southwest of Machiasport (Washington County) on the eastern coast.

Stackpole [p.92-93] says Christian Remick received his first land grant before 1651 which accumulated into 240 acres. Regarding one of those lots: According to Stackpole he was granted 20 acres on 17 Jul 1661 which was laid out (surveyed) 22 Feb 1665. He deeded this and other grants east of this to son Isaac Remick who then sold the land to John Dennet, Jr. on 2 May 1698 and Isaac Remick then removed to South Carolina. [Stackpole, p.90] On the uploaded image (hand drawn map) the acreage Christian Remick granted to his son Isaac appears to be bordering Spinney's joint owned land in Great Cove. A border dispute apparently followed the land ownership transfer.

There's a bit more history that can be extracted. See source Stackpole, p. 90-93, (check for other pages in this book by through a search on 'Remick'). https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc2.ark:/13960/t6833r748?urlappend=%3Bseq=99

As a side note: The source below is formatted in the Chicago Style of source referencing which is the preferred style for WikiTree profiles, but, don't let that dissuade you from adding primary sources which, in the end, is the most important aspect. Remember Pre-1700 profiles require records from primary sourced events. No unvetted (unreliable) personal online family tree's. Stackpole is a fairly well known historian and he quoted from town records, deeds, etc. although assertions for parentage need to be verified. I hope all this helps you future Remick descendants.

Timothy Remmick was at the Battle of Bunker Hill with Phinny's 8th Maine. Later John Remmick would serve at Chancellorsville, Fredricksbug and Gettysburg. He received a bill from the Federal government for the vegetables they ate while stationed on a farm in Fredricksberg. My family has a letter from him describing their situation. My great Grandmother Remmick married John Pinkham. All are buried in Orchard Park in Kittery Maine.

Remick-10 and Remick-72 appear to represent the same person because: Similar dates and places. Needs sources. Wife speculations.

Remick-10 and Remick-46 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Unknown birth place; accepted thought is that it was likely Holland. Same spouse.
Remich-2 and Remick-46 appear to represent the same person because: Same data. I propose saving the last name as "Remick", as that is how his descendants have spelled the family name. But also, we should note the Remich spelling as an alternate in the notes, and that that was how Christian spelled his own surname.
The NEHGS register lists Christian's surname as "Remich". His descendant Oliver Remick, who wrote a genealogy of the family, wrote that Christian did spell his last name with an 'h', but subsequent generations have all chosen to spell the name as 'Remick'. Oliver also refers to him as Remick. 'Remack', 'Remmick", and "Ramick" and possibly "Reinick" were other alternate spelling in source documents.
Unmerged match set with Remick-46. Birth/death dates and places, wife's first name, and daughter Sarah match, but I don't know which spelling is correct Last Name at Birth.
