Biography

It's not very clear when James Rentfroe, son of William Rentfroe & his wife Jane[1]was born nor when he married Esther Van Bibber.

We do know that in 1742 he was named sergeant in the militia formed by Capt. George Robinson.[1] The Rentfroe's were closely associated with the Cole family and George Robinson as they all seemed to move around to the same areas: from Shenandoah River area of old Orange Co., Augusta Co. on Buffalo Creek, and in the Black Water River Community in Lunenburg Co. Indeed, James' brothers Peter and Stephen and three Cole brothers made up this militia.[1]

On 20 September 1745 James received a land grant of 148 acres along Buffalo Creek, a branch of the Roanoke.[2] Yet the following year he moved to a place along the Blackwater and operated a mill with his brother.[1] From 1748-1750 he is listed on the Lunenburg County, Virginia tax lists as James Rentfro, Sr.[1]

Jean Morford from the Van Bibber archives has written that James Rentfro and Esther sold land in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1773 and that is the last record of them in Virginia.[3] Cole Footprints gives 20 August 1770 as the last date known, when James and Esther sold land to Matthew Talbot and indicates the record is in Book 2, page 8.[1]

Re: The query I sent you recently on Peter/James Renfro:
James and Esther (Van Bibber?) Renfro did not die in Barren Co., KY as I stated. I mixed him up with John Renfro who also had a wife Esther. James and Esther Renfro sold land in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1773. That is the last record of them in VA.
