In 1869,[7] John married Phebe Elizabeth Ellithorpe, daughter of Stephen R. Ellithrope (1819-1902) and Emily C. Smith (1821-1898).[8] Together they had children:
After Mettie's birth the family moved to Marshall, Pawnee, Kansas,[18] where they owned and cultivated land next to John's parents and brother.[18] They remained in Marshall, Kansas for at least the next five years.[19] By 1900, John, Phebe, Myrt, and Ella had returned to Illinois, settling in Algonquin Township, McHenry, Illinois, where John and the two children were day laborers.[2] Why had their economic circumstances changed so drastically from prosperous farmers to day laborers?
By 1910, Myrt had died, Ella had married, and Mettie was on her own.[20] This left John and Phebe domiciled together alone in Clear Fork, Kansas, where he was again working his own land.[20]
Unfortunately, their peaceful existence as a couple ended after more than 40 years of marriage with the death of John in 1912,[21] He was laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Blaine, Pottawatomie, Kansas.[22] Phebe survived him by a decade, dying in 1922[8] and was buried beside her husband.[23]
