Biography

Daniel Johannes was born on 8 September 1842 in Klein Drakenstein in the Paarl district in the Cape Colony. He was the son of Andries Petrus Retief and Margaretha Elisabeth du Toit.^[1]

He was baptised on 9 October 1842 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Paarl in Paarl.^[1]

He farmed on Keerweder in Klein Drakenstein. ^[2]

On 30 January 1865 he married Christina Hamman in the Dutch Reformed Church of Wellington in Wellington.^[3]

He died on 2 May 1935 at the house of his son on the farm "Keerweder", Klein Drakenstein, Paarl^[2] due to old age and cerebral anaemia which lasted 5 months.^[4] He was buried in the Klein Drakenstein cemetery in the Paarl district.^[5]
