Biography

Johannes Hendrik was born on 13 November 1756.[1] He was the son of Paulus Retief and Dorothea Milius.[2]

He was baptised on 28 November 1756 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Swartland in Malmesbury.[2]

On 6 February 1780 he married Margaretha Rossouw in the Dutch Reformed Church of Drakenstein in Paarl.[3]

On 10 September 1791 he became the ownner of the farm Vondeling in the Wagenmakers Vallei. It was 32 morgen and 375 square roods in size.[4]

On 4 January 1815 he married Helena Alida Nieuwoudt in the Dutch Reformed Church of Drakenstein in Paarl.[5]

On 30 January 1818 he transferred Vondeling to his son, Daniel Johannes Retief and his son in law Jacob Daniel Malan.[4]

On 6 November 1831 he married Magdalena Maria de Villiers with special license in the Dutch Reformed Church of Drakenstein in Paarl.[6]

He died on 25 April 1834 in his dwelling house in Paarl at the age of 77 years 6 months and 12 days.[7]
