Margaret Rhodes was the daughter of Thomas Rhoads and Hannah Freeman of Randolph County, Indiana. Based upon the 1850 and 1880 Census records, Margaret was born circa 1833.[1][2]
Margaret Rhodes's mother died in 1841, leaving her father, Thomas Rhoads, with several young children to raise. By 1842, Margaret's father had remarried to her mother's sister, Elizabeth Freeman.[3] More Rhodes siblings were born. It was during the lifetime of these siblings that different branches set upon a spelling for the name. Margaret's brother Isom settled on the "Rhoades" spelling. Margaret's uncle William kept the "Rhoads" spelling. In North Carolina the family had been known as "Rodes" "Roads" "Rhoads" and "Rhodes."
