Biography

John was born on May 7, 1854, in Marion County, Kentucky. He is the son of Hillery Rhodes and Louisa Mattingly.

He was baptized on May 7, 1862 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Raywick, Marion County, Kentucky by Rev. Joseph Elder. The sponsor was Harriet Livers.[1]

He was married on April 2, 1879, in Macoupin County, Illinois, to Theresa Jane Ray, the daughter of Joseph Ray and Theresa Mills.

He died of typhoid fever on September 20, 1883, in Spanish Needle, Macoupin County, Illinois. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois.

His wife, Theresa Ray Rhodes was appointed the administrator of his estate and posted $2,000 bond on October 5, 1883 by Lewis P. Peebles, Macoupin County Judge.[2]

1860 - United States Federal Census - In 1860, the Rhodes family is living in District 1, Marion County, Kentucky and consists of Hilery, 40; Louisa, 49; Matthew 18; William, 17; Nancy, 13; Eliza, 11; Sarah, 8; John 6; and Frances, 2.[3]

1870 - United States Federal Census - In 1870, Hillary is listed as Henry Rhodes of Canada, 50, with his wife Matilda, 40, and daughters Eliza, 20, and Francis, 12. His son John, 15, is also with the household as is a 14 year old Edward Rhodes.[4]

April 2, 1879 - Marriage - Married to Theresa Jane Ray in Macoupin County, Illinois.

1880 - United States Federal Census - In the 1880 census, John is listed as John H. Rhoades, 24, and is living with his wife Jane Rhoades, 24, in Gillespie, Macoupin County, Illinois. Also in the household is their son Albertie Rhoades, 4 months. John Henry is listed as a farmer.[5]

September 20, 1883 - Death - Spanish Needle, Macoupin County, Illinois.
