Biography

John was born in August 11,1801, probably in Kentucky. I place him as the son of Ignatius Rhodes and Alisia Greenwell although others tend to place him as a son of Ignatius's brother, Benedict. However, all of Benedict's land went to his two daughters and their husbands. His birth conflicts with information for James Rhodes' family leaving Ignatius as the most likely father.

He passed away on August 11, 1864 in Marion County, Kentucky and is buried at St. Charles Cemetery. A memorial page has been constructed on Find A Grave. The page list his father as Benedict Rhodes, which I disagree with for a number of reasons.

August 11, 1801 - Birth - Probably born in Kentucky but there is a possibility his birth occurred in Maryland.

1841 - Marion County Tax List - Rhodes, John L. (listed next to William Rhodes) - 186 acres, Rolling Fork/value 1860, 1 white male over 21, 1 black male over 16, total value blacks 1000, 4 horses/mares value 1500, 12 cattle/value 20, total value 10700.[1]

1843 - Marion County Tax List - On the 1834 Marion County tax list, John L Rhodes is listed with 270 acres worth $1920, 4 total slaves worth $975, 5 horses and mares worth $145, 12 cattle worth $15, and 1 white male.[2]

1847 - Marion County Tax List - In the 1847 Marion county tax list, John L. Rhodes is on two lines. Totally he has 167 acres of land worth $2220. He has two slaves over age 16 and four total slaves worth $945. He also has 8 horse and mares worth $200 and two mules worth $60. He is also listed with 25 head of cattle at $60. Three children are show.[3]

1849 - Marion County Tax List - On the 1849 Marion County, Kentucky, tax list, John L. Rhodes is shown with 268 acres on Rolling Fork worth $2500. He has three slaves over 16 years old and 7 total slaves worth $1600; 9 horses and mares worth $200; 7 mules worth $175; 26 cattle worth $70.[4]

1851 - Marion County Tax List - John L:. Roads is listed with 176 acres of land on the Rolling Forl worth $1760, 1 shite male over 21 years of age, 11 horses or mules worth $550, 24 head of cattle worth $230. [5]

August 11, 1864 - Death - Marion County, Kentucky.
