Biography

Charles was born in 1837 in Meade County, Kentucky. He was the son of James Rhodes and Catherine Mattingly.

A bond for the marriage of Charles Ignatius Rhodes and Elizabeth Ellen Payne was issued on January 26, 1858, in Meade County, Kentucky. William M. Payne signed as surety.[1] The couple was married on February 2, 1858, at her father's home in Meade County.[2]

He enlisted in August 1862 at Whitesville, Kentucky, in Co. E, 10th Kentucky Cavalry (C.S.A.) under General Morgan's command.

He died on October 5, 1908,in Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky and is buried in Mater Dolorosa Catholic Cemetery in Owensboro. A memorial page has been established on Find A Grave.

1850 - United States Federal Census - In the 1850 census, James Rhode, 45, is living with his wife Catherine, 46, with their children, Ann c, 25; James W., 24; Isabel, 22; Alex C., 20; George, 18; Elizabeth, 16 and Charles, 12. Both of the James's are listed as farmers.[3]

February 2, 1858 - Marriage - Married to Elizabeth Ellen Payne in Meade County, Kentucky.

1860 - United States Federal Census - In the 1860 census, James Rhodes, 57, is living with his wife, Catherine, 58, in Concordia, Meade County, Kentucky. Living with them are their sons, George Rhodes, 28, and Charles Rhodes, 23, George's wife, Mary, 24; Charles' wife, E.E. Rhodes, 18 and their daughter, Mary F. Rhodes, 1. Also with the family are Micajah Stiff, 31 and Stephen A. Mattingly, 49. James and Charles are listed as farmers while George is listed as a pilot. Stiff and Mattingly are farm labor.[4]

1880 - United States Federal Census - In the 1880 census, Charles Rhodes, 42, is living with his wife, Elizabeth, 36, in Owensboro, Daviess County Kentucky. Living with them are their daughters, Gertrude, 19; Rosa, 13; Minnie, 10; Adelia, 8; and Annie, 4. Also living with them is Matilda Reynolds, 62. Charles is a distiller.[5]

1900 - United States Federal Census - In the 1900 census, Charles I Rhodes, 61, and his wife, Elizabeth Rhodes, 58, are living in Owensboro, Daviess County, Ohio. Living with them are their daughters, Adelia, 24 and Annie, 23. Also in the house are boarders, Sallie Manning, 16; Eugene Manning, 28; Peter Manning, 28; Georgie Mercer, 13; Joe Hayle, 23; and Marcus Hawkins, 22. Charles is working as a night watchman and Adelia is a Milliner.[6]

October 5, 1908 - Death - Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky.
