Mercer was born in 1804. Many genealogies identify him as the son of James M. Rhodes and Elizabeth A. (Jennings) Rhodes. Mercer married Allie Nix, 1824, Newton County, Georgia.[1] In 1850 they are enumerated on the federal census in Newton County. Mercer died 1859. [2] Notwithstanding his death he was enumerated on the federal census in 1860. [3]
Research Notes
James M. Rhodes, whom many identify as father of Mercer, left a will that identified eight living children at the time of his death. There is no Mercer. There is one James M. Rhodes--and perhaps for that reason Mercer is sometimes styled James Mercer-- however James M. is more generally considered to be James Maderson Rhodes, Jr..
