Biography

John was born between about 1530 and 1541, based on his marriage date. It is an assumption that his name was really "John Rhodes," because the only surviving record of his existence, namely his 1560 marriage record, renders the name "Rode," or perhaps "Rods." There do not seem to be any records of the christening of any children of this couple in Derbyshire based on indexed databases; certainly none at the Church where they were married.

The Parish Register entry states Nupti finerunt Johanes Rode et Agneta Shortt xxx die [November 1560]." ("Marriage of John Rode and Agnes Shortt completed the 30th day.") [Image page 10 of the Ancestry.com filmstrip of Derbyshire parish registers]

The prior version of this biography stated that "he passed away about 1570," but there is no burial record for him that year in the Derby (All Saints) Parish Register. No source was provided other than Robert Bailey's memory, termed "first hand information," but of course that is absurd unless Robert Bailey has a time machine. ^[1]

At a minimum, if there is any possibility that John Rode/Roads/Rhodes was the father of Elizabeth (Roads) Oldham, then John must have lived to 1590 at the very least. (That statement does not constitute an endorsement of the theory that Elizabeth was John's daughter. Such would be very unlikely unless Agnes died and John remarried a much younger woman.)
