Biography

Mary E. Rhodes was born on 4 January 1848 in Westbrookville, a hamlet in the town of Deerpark, Orange county, New York, USA. She was the daughter of Mathias Rhodes and Jane Archer.^[1]

In 1850 Mary was a two year-old child living in the household of Mathias Rhodes in Mamakating, Sullivan county, New York.^[2]

In 1855 Mary was listed in the New York state census as the 7 year-old daughter of Mathias Rhodes, born in Sullivan county and living in Mamakating.^[3]

In 1860 Mary was a 12 year-old child in the household of Mathias Rhodes, living in the Forestburgh P.O. section of Mamakating, Sullivan, New York, USA.^[4]

Mary eventually became a school teacher. In 1870, she was working in Greenville, Greene county, New York and lived in the household of a local clergyman, Rev. R.H. Kelly.^[5] This may have been how she met her future husband, John H. Wood, who was also a clergyman in Greenville. The couple were married on 19 March 1872 at Bridesburg Methodist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[6]

In 1875, Mary and John were listed in the New York state census as still living in Greenville, in the household of John's parents, Hezekiah and Eliza Wood.^[7] John was identified as a 32 year-old ME [Methodist Episcopal] Minister born in Michigan, Mary was his 24 year-old wife born in Sullivan county, and the couple had a 1 1/2 year old son, John H. Wood, born in Pennsylvania.

Mary died on 1 June 1926 in Collingdale, Delaware county, Pennsylvania^[8] and was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[9]
