Biography

John Rice was born about 1752 in Hanover County, British Colony of Virginia. He married Mary Finney in 1778. They removed for a while to Suenandoah Valley but removed to Rockingham where he died in 1804.[1]

John Rice was a member of the First Court of Lunenburg, Virginia. An application for NSSAR membership states John Rice enlisted in the Revolutionary Army early in the war and served until its close. He was made Captain on 10 Nov 1780.

Capt. John Rice of Rockingham County, Virginia, son of William and Sarah Rice, was born in Culpepper [sic] County, 1752, and died in Rockingham County, 1804. (Will Probated April 1804). He married in 1778, Mary Finney, born in Accomac [sic] County, ..."
In 1789, John Rice owned 861 acres of land in Rockingham County, Va., and was still an officer in the 1st. Military Company. (see "History of Rockingham County, Va. by Wayland, p. 449.)[2]

John's will was admitted to probate in 1804.

"He willed all of his land and slaves to his wife during her life, to be divided, at her death, amonst [sic] his children, except his daughter who had married James Snaden, and gone to Bourbon county, Ky. He had probably given her her share when she went to Kentucky.... The Rices of Rockingham county are buried in the Dayton burying ground, commencing at the South side of the graveyard and extending Northward. First is old Mrs. Finney [mother of John's wife], who came over from Accomac county, or Culpeper, to live with her daughter Mary, and son-in-law John Rice. Next to her is John Rice [this profile]; then Mary, his daughter; then Ursula Gaines Rice; then Mary Finney Rice, th wife of John; then three or four children; then William Rice, Johns oldest son, who is the first one who has a lettered tombstone. The rest have just plain stones from the creek."[3]

Children (order uncertain):[3]

  • Daughter who married James Snaden and removed to Kentucky
  • Mary (buried next to her father; unmarried?)
  • William (eldest son), b 27 Jul 1779; d 2 Aug 1838

This 1835 Chancery suit among the heirs of William Rice names the children of John Rice, particularly the named heirs of his daughter who married "Snoden" are clear in image 28. https://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/full_case_detail.asp?CFN=113-1835-011#img

Can we get some better sources for the identification of his children. I added a quote from Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper. Can anyone find better sourcing?

P.S. The two sons currently attached (James and John Rice Jr) can't be his; he's too young to be their father.

The dates seem to be all over the place for these children, depending on what source I find. With all of the individuals named John Rice Sr & Jr in Virginia alone, separating them is proving to be a real headache. I'm beginning to feel that two families may well be combined here.

We have a problem. Application for NSSAR membership states John Rice, son of William and Sarah Rice, was born in 1752; married Mary Finney in 1778. He enlisted in the Revolutionary army early in the war and served until its close. He was made Captain on 10 Nov 1780. "Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia" by Raleigh T. Green, states John's oldest son was William Rice, born 1779. Do we have two John Rices confused here?
Rice-3805 and Rice-3203 appear to represent the same person because: same birth and death dates; both married to Mary Finney.
