I am Lola. I was born at Mercy Hospital in Nampa, Idaho 18 September 1945. My eldest brother said they sent me back for a recall about a week later - - but I survived!
My mother, Nellie Nina (Scott) Rice, committed suicide when I was 7 1/2 years old. I lived with my dad's older sister, Edna May (Rice) Strait for the remainder of that school year (attended the rest of 2nd grade at Parma Elementary) and the following school year (attended Ten Davis School), then my dad remarried. My stepmother and I had some challenges, but I credit her with getting me into a church where I learned about Jesus' love and God's amazing plan of salvation available to me through the sacrifice of His Son. After losing my mother, I was very open to hearing about God's love, and for that I owe my stepmother a huge debt of gratitude!
During my formal educational history, I attended schools in Wilder, Parma, Ten Davis, Midvale - - and finally back to Parma for 8th grade through Senior year, and graduated from Parma High School in 1963 with an amazing class. (My dad was a school teacher and I had him as my teacher for 7th grade math at Midvale and 8th grade science at Parma.) In school my greatest passion was music. I played trumpet, and sang.
I attended Northwest College (now University) from the Fall of 1963 through March 1967. I earned an AA degree in June, 1965, and continued working toward my B.A. I left college lacking 23 credits for getting my B. A..
I was married (to HCL) 24 June 1966 and we had a son June 8, 1967, and a year later I had a miscarriage. We were together 1 1/2 years, and then legally separated. I walked away from God at that point for +-2 years. I was very angry that He let me make such a terrible mistake.
I vowed to never marry again - - but that vow didn't last long once I met Al. If I were to marry again it had to be someone I could have incredible respect for, and everyone who knew him respected him and spoke well of him. We only dated 5 weeks before we were married.
21 August 1970 Alan B. Cain and I were married. When I was pregnant with our first child, I almost lost her, and I prayed and said, "God, I don't know if you even exist, but if you do, and if you will save this baby, I will recommit my life to You." He did - and I did.
Al and I have 3 daughters, and they were raised in Montesano, WA. I had the privilege of getting to stay home with my kids, but did a lot of volunteering in my church and community. (I referred to myself as a Professional Volunteer!)
From 1985 to 1988 I was the Health Educator for Grays Harbor County, which meant I went into schools and did Sexual Abuse Prevention Education K-12, and Sex Education and AIDS Awareness Education appropriate to the age level for Middle School and High School kids, as well as some teacher training and community education.
Finishing my college education was always a goal, and I finally did that in June 1990 when I graduated with a B. A. from The Evergreen State College in Olympia after taking 50 credits that school year to meet their graduation requirements.
My interests from childhood still remain: faith, music, reading and photography - - but as I got older I added writing.
I have written several plays for children and youth group - - but my significant ones are the 2 musicals that I wrote.
I wrote and directed the Centennial musical play for Montesano, Roots & Branches. We performed it 2 different years, 8 years apart, 1983 and 1991. (I didn't write all of the music for it - - just a couple of the songs. Several of the songs were written by Helen Davis, the author of Washington's State Song: Washington, My Home.)
I also wrote (and in 2008 edited and re-wrote) a children's musical titled A LETTER FROM G. O. D., which shares my greatest passion - - my faith in God, and His amazing story of salvation for all who choose Him. I self-published it in 2012 by establishing my own Publishing Company and hiring the printing done. I wrote all of it, music included. As of 2015 it has only been performed two times.
We moved to Olympia, Washington in 2000 after living in Montesano for 30 years.
In 2018 while undergoing 28 days of proton radiation in Seattle for breast cancer, I edited my blog entires from 2010 and used them as a foundational part of a book titled 'LEAD ME TO THE CROSS' It is available as an e-book on Amazon (Kindle). It was designed to be a Lenten Journey, just as the original blog it was based on originally was.
As of 2021 I still sing on a Sunday morning worship team at church (though less often than I used to), still write, still take lots of pictures, and still love the Lord.....
