Pvt Henry Rice died of disease during the United States Civil War.

Henry Rose Rice was the son of Job Rice and [McCandlish-23|Jean McCandlish]]. He had blue eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion. He came to Michigan with his parents around 1834. He appears on the 1840 Census living with his parents at Grass Lake, Jackson, Michigan and on the 1850 Census in Sheridan Twp. Calhoun, County, Michigan.[1]Henry Rice bought property in Jackson County 1850 twice in in Sheridan Twp. Calhoun, County, Michigan.[2]

On 08 Dec 1859, Henry married Ruth Tenney in Marengo, Calhoun County, Michigan. Their marriage entry appears as: "This certifies that the rite of holy matrimony was celebrated between Henry R. Rice of Albion and Ruth Tenney of Marengo on December 8, 1859 at Marengo by Wm. Dryer. JP"

The document was signed by Ruth's father, Alvah Tenney. In 1860, they lived in [3][4] They had two children together:

Ella M. Rice Allen 1863 - 1931

Henry served in the 11th Regiment, Michigan Infantry (2nd Organization during the Civil War.[5]

11th infantry served in 16 general engagements from Gallatin Tennessee, Aug. 13, 1862 to the siege of Atlanta, GA July 22 to August 27, 1864. The regiment was reorganized in Feb. 1865 at Jackson under the Superintendence of Colonel W.L. Stoughton, Commandant of Camp and on March 4, 1865 four companies left the State for Nashville, TN. The remaining 6 companies leaving Jackson with the staff, within 14 days subsequently. After a period of service, it was mustered out at Jackson September 16, 1865.

When Henry enlisted in the Army, he was 41 years old. Ruth was pregnant for William at the time. Henry had dysentery and was hospitalized in Tennessee before getting discharged. He was carried home in September and was still very sick. He died before the year was out at Harper's U.S. General Hospital, 3825 Brush St., Detroit. [6] Henry is buried in East Cemetery, Grass Lake, Jackson, Michigan. Buried on lot 40 &41 Block 3.0G; Civil war Marker at Grave.[7]
