Note: The spelling of Ica, seems to vary --Ikay, Iky, Icay, Ica but they do all seem to be the same person.
Just joined the list. I don't have any connection to the Rice family, but I'm very interested in the life (and death) of Icay Rice. Back in 1999 I co-founded the Ruddell and Martin Stations Historical Assoc. and have been researching the captives from these forts. The Rice family is one of those families. Since my main expertise on the Rice's is their time in Kentucky, I'll post some records associated with that.
From Early Certificates of Settlement and Preemption Warrants in Kentucky County, Virginia. _http://apps.sos.ky.gov/land/nonmilitary/settlements/_ (http://apps.sos.ky.gov/land/nonmilitary/settlements/) “We do hereby certify that Ica Rice is entitled to the preemption of four hundred acres of land at the state price in the District of Kentucky on account of making an actual settlement in the month of April 1779 lying on Licking Creek adjoining the lands of Joel Hill. Given under our hands art Bryants Station on Elkhorn Creek this 17th day of January 1780.”
There is no record of a grant received by anyone in the Rice family.
George Rogers Clark Papers, Library of Virginia (microfilm). “Kentucky, Martin’s Station, I do certify that Icay Rice himself found himself and James Rice soldiers in actual service at Martin’s Station, Corn and Salt from the 10th day March 1780 till the 20th day of May 1780 being in all 144 days rations-----James Trabue Coms.”
George Rogers Clark and His Men (I don't have the full citation readily available)
Payroll of Capt. Gatliff’s Company 17 Mar to 26 Jun 1780 - Iky Rice – discharged 12 June 1780.
This book has a second payroll with the dates of 10 Mar to 26 Jun 1780 and it lists both Iky and James Rice with no individual dates. Its possible that James Rice was a son of Icay's, but I have not been able to figure out what happened to him. There is no record of his capture.
Rev War Pension of Capt. Charles Gatliff. Draper Manuscript Collection, 29J:88-90(1) “I assisted in erecting Riddle's Fort, in Kentucky, in 1779 I volunteered in Capt. Haggin's Company - and that was on Bowman's Campaign - had a battle at Chilecotha with the Shawnees; we got but one scalp, but lossed 10 or 12 men. After our return I engaged to hunt for game to supply Riddle's Fort to prevent it breaking up - Dorchester, their hunter, being killed, and his mate refusing to serve longer. In hunting I frequently took with me Thomas Emory, who was killed near the Fort. I continued until I concluded to build another fort called since Martin's Fort. I hunted for Martin's Fort sometime. Isaac Reace, my hunting mate, being killed, I took such others as I could get to serve. When I was absent, the Fort was taken by the British and Indians, and it's inhabitants made prisoners - amongst whom were my wife and four children.”
This Isaac Reace is actually Icay Rice of Martin's Station.
Then in 1784 Maiden Rice and her children appear on a ration roll as prisoners at Detroit. I don't have this readily available. (I'm in the process of moving.)
Lastly, for Kathy and anyone else, if you go to the Library of Virginia web site and click on...
_http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/land/index.htm)
...and then click on the "Virginia Land Office Patents..." link it will take you to a search page. Type in "Rice, Joseph" and it will take you to a results page. Select the 1746 document and it will take you to Joseph Rice's 400 acre land grant in Amelia Co. on Sandy River. You can download the images for this (there are two images - p. 605 & 606). The link to the images is the top "URL (click on link)".
