Obituary
Canowindra Star (NSW : 1900 - 1902), Friday 18 January 1901, page 2
THE LATE MR. R. RICE.
It is with deep regret we report the death of one of the most highly respected erstwhile residents of Canowindra, in the person of Mr. Robert Rice, who departed this life on Monday last at his residence Tarloo, Dulwich Hill, at the age of 69 years.
Mr. Rice, who until about three years ago, had resided in Canowindra for a lengthened period, was a native of Yorkshire, England, came to Australia in the year 1858, and after a short residence in Sydney, he brought his young wife and children to Neville, where he followed the agricultural industry for about 15 years.
Whilst residing at Neville he purchased considerable property in Canowindra, and liking the appearance of the district decided to take up his residence here. This he did about the year 1884.
On arrival at Canowindra Mr. Rice took up the wheat growing industry to a large extent, combining the occupation of sheep and cattle grazing, and soon established for himself a reputation as an industrious and successful farmer. This occupation he followed until about three years ago, when he retired from actively participating in the struggles of life, upon a competance, and removed his place of abode to Sydney, where he has resided ever since, paying Canowindra and occasional visit.
The deceased gentleman was held in the highest respect and was looked up to by the whole of the residents of this district, as a most upright and just man, and one who, where charity was justified, never failed to assist a good purpose ; he was a thoroughly public spirited man and any movement for the benefit of the district received his most hearty support, and was one of the most promineht men in most of the local institutions.
He was one of the trustees for the recreation reserve, and the School of Arts, of which latter instituition he has been continually a member.
The Progress Committee received his heartiest support also.
To the School of Arts, he presented the present site upon which the building stands, and later donated another piece as an enlargement to the first site.
The estates owned by Mr. Rice in Canowindra were Glassonbery, Lifton Patk, and Corleen, in addition to considerable town property.
At Neville and Orange also the deceased gentleman owned considerable land. Paralysis was Ihe primary cause of death, combined with the general breaking up of the system.
Mr. Rice who had been twice married, leaves a grown up family of four girls and five boys by the first marriage of whom two girls and three boys are married.
Besides this grown up family Mr. Rice leaves a widow and three small children, two boys and a girl.
We sympathise most sincerely with his bereaved family and the district generally in losing a good father, an energetic citizen, and a true Christian; one who was beloved by his children, respected throughout the whole district as a man of integrity and worth, and admired by his church for his firm religious convictions and stability of opinions.
