Biography

Mr. Rice was born on a farm east of Milton, Feb. 24, 1883, the son of Miles Rice and Carrie Greenman, and spent most of his life in this community.[1] In his early manhood he was a livestock dealer and later worked in the butcher shops in different towns coming to Milton Junction from Milwaukee 19 years ago. He opened the E. A. Rice market on Main street, and lived in Milton Junction until about two years ago when he purchased his mother's property in Milton and moved there, doing extensive remodeling to the house.

Just recently Mr. Rice sold an interest in his meat market to his son-in-law, Edward O. Karberg, who has had charge of the market since his discharge from the Navy.

He was married to Alice Thompson, daughter of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Randall Thompson, March 25, 1903.[2] She died April 26, 1926. He was married to Mrs. Viola Wilmarth Jones, Aug. 23, 1927.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Leanore C. Rice Karberg, Janesville; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Carrie Rice, Milton; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Stone, Milton, and Mrs. Polly Hurley, Riverside, Calif. His father, Miles Rice, died May 7, 1942.

Mr. Rice was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Milton Junction Commercial club.

Edward A. Rice, who had been in failing health since receiving an injury to his chin, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday in Mercy hospital where he had been taken Friday night. He was a patient in a Milwaukee hospital several weeks last fall and since then had been cared for in his home in Milton.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Gray and Albrecht funeral home, with Rev. W. S. Carr officiating. Kenneth Babcock sang two selections. Burial was in Milton cemetery[3] with S. L. Mabson, Irving Crandall, E. R. Hull, J. R. Wolfe, Fred Wendt and W. S. Howland acting as pallbearers.[4]
