Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Michael Rice was a Virginia colonist.

Michael was apparently born in England, probably prior to 1680. He immigrated to Virginia 1691. Source Bibliography: Nugent, Nell Marion. Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants. Vol. 2: 1666-1695. Indexed by Claudia B. Grundman. Richmond, VA: Virginia State Library, 1977. 609p.[1]

Michael's wife is unknown. He definitely had two son, Michael, Jr. and Samuel, and possibly two more Phillip R. and John. Michael is named in the will of his son Michael, Jr. as executor. (See below)

Research Notes

  • Son of Michael Rice, b c 1684: Index to Wills in Goochland County Court House: Rice, Michael, Deed Book 3, p 83, 21 March 1737/38.[2] Note the Index in Virginia Will Records is incorrect. It gives the date as 21 March 1731. Transcript of the will gives the recording date as 21 March 1737. Since the will was written 27 September 1737, the actual date would be 21 March 1737/8; new date 21 March 1738.

  • Virginia Land Records; Extracts from King William County Records:[3]
    • "1793. Samuel Squires Rice, Philip R. Rice, Wm. Rice and James Rice, to Wm. F. Gaines. Deed under will of Samuel Rice, deceased, dated 1783. Mentions son Mitchell's widow, grandson Samuel Squires Rice, son Philip Russell Rice, son Wm. Rice, son James Rice. (309-314)"
    • "1797. John Rice of the Co. of Mason, Ky. to Wm. Rice of King William. Land inherited by the will of his father, Michael Rice, deceased. Mentions brothers Samuel Squire Rice and Philip R. RIce. (P. 192.)"
Tentative inferences:

Michael Rice, born c 1680-1685; died after March 1738. Had sons:

  1. Michael Rice, Jr., b c 1710, d c March 1738
  2. Samuel Squire Rice, b aft 1716, not of age in September 1737; d Sep 1783.
    1. Samuel Squires Rice, Jr. (Feb 1743/4-1813?)
    2. Mitchell [Michael] Rice, d bef 1783
      1. Samuel Squires Rice
    3. Philip Russell Rice, b 1760 King William Co., VA; enlisted 1775; m Martha M Vaughan 1789 in Goochland County; d Dover, Mason Co., KY[4]
    4. Wm. Rice,
    5. James Rice, b c 1755 -- "James served 2 yrs. in the Rev. War, applied for a pension and received it eventually. He moved from KY to OH to live on land his son Phillip gave him. His death date is listed in Clermont County, Ohio court records as April 30, 1835. Nov 1797 James Rice of Mason, Kentucky sold land to William his brother from King William, Virginia."[5] Application for pension filed Bracken County, KY; stated age 68 years old in 1823.[4] On 30 July 1823 James submitted an inventory of his assets, total $68.17. He listed as family a wife, age 44-47 yrs old; son Michael, age 12; dau Anetta, age 9; dau Betsy age 7 or 8; dau Cornelia between 5 & 6 yrs old; dau Parthena abt three years old. Brother Phillip made a deposition agreeing with James' service. James Rice was inscribed on the pension roll in Bracken Co., KY on 30 July 1823 @ $8/mo. Cert of pension issued 5 September 1823. Applied for transfer from Kentucky to Ohio on 7 October 1833.[6]
  1. John Rice
  2. Philip R. Rice
  • Samuel may be the youngest son since Michael, Jr. leaves his entire estate to him with father Michael Rice as trustee and executor. Have identified some of the descendants of Michael Rice, Sr., but have not found anything to connect him as son of Thomas Rice and Marcey Hewes.
